Researchers Warn of Misinformation and Vulnerability to Malicious Prompting in China’s DeepSeek AI

DeepSeek’s Disruptive AI Under Scrutiny Amidst Accuracy and Security Concerns

The meteoric rise of China’s DeepSeek, with its remarkably low-cost AI, has captivated global attention. However, this spotlight has also invited intense scrutiny, revealing significant concerns about the accuracy and security of its models. NewsGuard, an information reliability organization, recently audited DeepSeek’s chatbot and found it provided inaccurate or non-existent answers 83% of the time when queried about news-related topics. Furthermore, when presented with demonstrably false claims, the chatbot debunked them a mere 17% of the time, ranking it near the bottom of NewsGuard’s evaluation of 11 leading chatbots, a lineup dominated by Western counterparts like OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4 and Anthropic’s Claude. This dismal performance raises serious questions about the reliability and trustworthiness of DeepSeek’s AI technology.

Several factors contribute to DeepSeek’s poor performance. The chatbot claims its training data only extends to October 2023, explaining its inability to handle recent events. Moreover, it appears susceptible to manipulation, readily repeating false claims, potentially on a large scale. Beyond accuracy concerns, DeepSeek’s adherence to Chinese information policies further skews its output. The chatbot frequently echoes the Chinese government’s stance on sensitive topics, even when not directly prompted, raising concerns about censorship and biased information dissemination. This apparent alignment with official narratives reinforces anxieties about the potential for DeepSeek to be exploited for propaganda or misinformation campaigns.

Adding to the growing unease, cybersecurity firm Kela released its own analysis highlighting DeepSeek’s vulnerability to malicious exploitation. Their researchers successfully "jailbroke" the model in numerous scenarios, enabling it to generate harmful content, including instructions for ransomware development, fabrication of sensitive information, and even recipes for toxins and explosives. This vulnerability stems partly from DeepSeek’s transparent display of its reasoning process, inadvertently providing malicious actors with insights into circumventing its safety guardrails. This contrasts sharply with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which conceals its internal workings, making it more difficult to manipulate for illicit purposes.

The confluence of accuracy and security concerns surrounding DeepSeek has triggered a significant backlash, particularly in the West. Despite its rapid rise to the top of app download charts in the US and elsewhere, concerns about DeepSeek’s origins and data practices are mounting. The US Navy has advised its personnel against using the platform due to potential security and ethical concerns. The White House has acknowledged that the National Security Council is investigating the implications of DeepSeek’s emergence, reflecting the growing apprehension about its potential impact on national security and information integrity.

Adding to the controversy, allegations have surfaced that DeepSeek trained its models on the output of OpenAI’s models, a practice that could potentially violate OpenAI’s terms and conditions. This accusation has sparked further debate about the ethics of AI development and the use of training data, especially given the widespread practice of training AI models on publicly available data without explicit permission. The ongoing investigation by Italy’s data protection authority into DeepSeek’s data usage underscores the growing scrutiny of AI companies’ data practices and the need for greater transparency and accountability in the industry.

The rapid rise and subsequent scrutiny of DeepSeek underscore the complex challenges posed by the proliferation of AI technologies. While the potential benefits of AI are undeniable, ensuring accuracy, security, and ethical development remain paramount. The DeepSeek case serves as a stark reminder of the need for robust oversight, independent audits, and international collaboration to address the potential risks associated with AI and to prevent its misuse for malicious purposes. The international community must grapple with these challenges to harness the transformative power of AI while mitigating its potential harms.
