Misinformation has become one of the defining paradoxes of the digital age: humanity has never had more information at its fingertips, and yet we have rarely felt so uncertain about what is true. In a sweeping study published in Science, Allen, Watts, and Rand quantified the impact of misinformation and vaccine-skeptical content on Facebook, showing that this kind of content is not just a minor nuisance in the corner of our feeds. It is a substantial, measurable force that shapes public health debates and undermines trust in science. The researchers found that vaccine-skeptical material circulates widely, capturing attention and driving engagement in ways that accurate, reassuring health information often cannot match. At the same time, a survey of experts conducted by Altay and colleagues revealed something humbling: even among those who study misinformation for a living, there is no perfect consensus on what the term should mean. Does it include misleading clickbait? Satire mistaken for news? Conspiracy theories? The boundaries are blurry. This definitional ambiguity matters because how we define misinformation shapes how we measure it, regulate it, and try to correct it. One of the most striking early findings in this field came from Vosoughi, Roy, and Aral, who analyzed the spread of true and false news online and found that falsehoods travel faster, farther, and deeper than the truth. Lies are more novel, more surprising, and more emotionally charged. They trigger our instinct to share something that feels urgent, even when our rational mind has not had time to check it. We are not simply being tricked; we are being swept up in a system engineered to exploit our attention, our anxieties, and our deepest hopes and fears.
To understand why misinformation is so sticky, we have to look at how our brains and emotions interact with the online world. Misinformation rarely works through careful argument. It works through feeling. McLoughlin and colleagues demonstrated that misinformation exploits outrage to spread, and that moral outrage—especially anger at perceived injustice—acts as a kind of rocket fuel for social media sharing. When we encounter content that makes us furious, our impulse is not to investigate; it is to react and to recruit others to react with us. Martel, Pennycook, and Rand found that people who rely more heavily on emotion are more likely to believe fake news, even when they possess the cognitive ability to detect falsehoods. Watson and colleagues added another layer: negative online news articles are shared more often than positive or neutral ones, not because people enjoy doom, but because negative information feels more important and more deserving of action. This is not a character flaw; it is a feature of human evolution. Our ancestors survived by paying attention to threats, and that vigilance remains deeply wired into us. Fong and colleagues analyzed the language of conspiracy theorists on Twitter and found that conspiratorial speech tends to be more extreme, more certainty-laden, and more focused on us-versus-them narratives. It offers simple answers to complex problems and makes people feel like insiders who possess secret knowledge. Blassnig and colleagues connected this to populist rhetoric, showing how informal fallacies—oversimplification, ad hominem attacks, false dilemmas—are used to bypass careful reasoning and appeal directly to emotion and identity. Meanwhile, Carrasco-Farré found that deceptive content systematically differs from reliable sources in measurable ways: misinformation uses simpler language, demands less cognitive effort, and leans heavily on emotional triggers. In other words, misinformation is designed to be easy to digest and hard to resist. It tells us what we already want to believe, and it makes us feel good—or at least feel something—while doing it.
But misinformation does not spread by psychology alone. It is also a business model. Dek and colleagues mapped what they call the online manipulation economy, the sprawling network of actors who profit from crafting and amplifying deceptive content. The economics of attention mean that viral falsehoods can be worth real money, whether through advertising revenue, data harvesting, or political influence. Bellingcat’s analysis of Meta’s ad library during the U.S. presidential election showed how campaigns on Facebook and Instagram spent enormous sums on targeted messaging, with different ads micro-targeted to different groups. The tools of digital marketing—cost-per-thousand impressions, click-through rates, ad hooks—are not neutral. They are the same levers used to sell sneakers and streaming services, and they are exceptionally good at capturing attention. Research on advertising costs and benchmarks from platforms like Birch and Billo shows that attention is a scarce commodity, and getting people to stop scrolling is the first and hardest battle. Meta ad guides from practitioners like Metalla emphasize the importance of “hooks,” the first second or two of a video designed to freeze your thumb mid-scroll. That is the battleground where misinformation wins. If a false claim can hook us emotionally in the first moment, it does not need to win a factual argument. It simply needs to be shared before we think. Searles and Feezell introduced the concept of “scrollability” to describe how digital platforms encourage rapid, continuous, almost unconscious consumption. In this environment, slow deliberation is a luxury most of us do not feel we have. By the time we realize something was false, it has already been seen, shared, liked, and internalized by thousands of people. The architecture of the platform rewards speed over accuracy, novelty over truth, and engagement over understanding. None of this absolves us of responsibility, but it does mean that the fight against misinformation is not just a fight against bad ideas. It is a fight against an entire economic and technological system built to monetize attention.
The good news is that researchers have been developing tools to fight back, and one of the most promising approaches is psychological inoculation, often called prebunking. The core idea is simple: just as vaccines expose our immune system to a weakened form of a virus so it can build defenses, we can expose people to weakened forms of misinformation so they can recognize and resist it in the future. This metaphor is not new—McGuire proposed it in the 1960s—but it has been revitalized in recent years by van der Linden, Roozenbeek, and their colleagues. Roozenbeek and van der Linden’s work has shown that inoculation interventions can reduce susceptibility to misinformation across cultures and across different types of deceptive content. Compton and colleagues reviewed the state of inoculation theory in the post-truth era, finding strong evidence that it works for contested science, conspiracy theories, and political misinformation. Maertens and colleagues added another important layer: psychological booster shots. Just as immunity wanes over time, resistance to misinformation fades, but short reminder “boosters” can significantly enhance long-term protection. This is a hopeful finding because it suggests that media literacy is not a one-time lesson but an ongoing practice. Furthermore, Huang and colleagues conducted a meta-analysis of media literacy interventions and found that they consistently improve resilience to misinformation. McPhedran and colleagues showed that psychological inoculation protects against the social media infodemic, and Lu and colleagues confirmed its effectiveness specifically for credibility assessment and discernment. Pennycook and colleagues investigated the combination of inoculation and accuracy prompts—simple reminders to think about whether something is true—and found that combining approaches can increase accuracy discernment. There have even been large-scale collaborations with platforms: Jigsaw’s prebunking campaign in Germany tested short videos that exposed viewers to manipulation tactics before they encountered them in the wild, with encouraging results. The BBC has described this as “vaccinating” against disinformation, and while the vaccine metaphor has limits, it captures something powerful: misinformation is contagious, but so is critical thinking.
Still, moving from laboratory success to real-world impact is harder than it looks. Several preregistered field studies conducted by Roozenbeek, Lasser, Marks, and colleagues have shown that the effects of misinformation interventions on actual sharing behavior can be modest, inconsistent, or difficult to detect in the chaotic context of real social media platforms. Part of the problem is that people are not passive receivers of misinformation; they are active participants who often reject corrections and interventions because those interventions feel threatening to their identities or social groups. Roozenbeek, Young, and Madsen wrote about the wilful rejection of psychological and behavioural interventions, noting that some people see prebunking as manipulation, censorship, or an attack on their worldview. Messages that say there is no future, that action is useless, can be just as damaging as flat-out denial, because they make people retreat instead of engage. The American Psychological Association’s consensus statement on health misinformation, led by van der Linden and colleagues, emphasizes that misinformation is a psychological, social, and structural phenomenon. It cannot be fixed by simply providing more facts, because facts are processed through emotions, identities, and social pressures. We need interventions that respect those realities instead of ignoring them.
Where does this leave us? Misinformation is not going to disappear. It is woven into the attention economy, into our psychological makeup, and into the ways we define ourselves against others. But that does not mean we are powerless. The research points toward a more holistic, humble, and human approach. First, we need to shift from downstream fact-checking to upstream prevention, teaching people how to spot manipulation tactics before they encounter them. Second, we need to recognize that simple media literacy lessons are not enough; they must be repeated, boosted, and embedded in the spaces where misinformation spreads. Third, we need to address the emotional and social drivers of sharing, which means creating environments where curiosity, nuance, and intellectual humility are valued over outrage and certainty. Fourth, we need platforms to be more transparent about the algorithms and ad systems that amplify misinformation, and to redesign those systems so that they do not reward false claims. Fifth, we need interdisciplinary collaboration: psychologists, computer scientists, journalists, educators, and citizens all have roles to play.
