East Haven Police Combat Wave of Hoaxes on Fake "East Haven Middle School" Facebook Page

EAST HAVEN, CT – The East Haven Police Department is grappling with a surge of misinformation spread through a fraudulent Facebook group posing as the official page for East Haven Middle School. This deceptive page, which boasts over 700 members and continues to grow despite warnings, has become a breeding ground for various hoaxes, including fabricated missing person reports, false wanted posters, and bogus job advertisements. Police believe the perpetrators are exploiting the community’s inherent compassion and local pride to disseminate these misleading posts, aiming to sow confusion and potentially gain personal benefits.

The "East Haven Middle School" Facebook group, though created in 2009, has only recently become a vector for these malicious activities. The East Haven Police Department issued its first warning to the public last Friday, alerting residents to the presence of the fraudulent page and the misleading information being circulated. This initial warning was followed by a more comprehensive statement on Sunday, reiterating the dangers posed by the page and urging community members to refrain from sharing any content originating from the group.

The police department emphasized the manipulative tactics employed by the scammers, who prey on the community’s empathy and desire to assist others. False missing person reports, playing on the fear and concern for vulnerable individuals, are particularly insidious. Similarly, fabricated wanted posters can unjustly tarnish reputations and create undue suspicion, undermining trust within the community. The phony job listings, meanwhile, serve as bait for potential victims of employment scams, luring them with promises of nonexistent opportunities.

The police department’s ongoing investigation aims to identify the individuals behind these hoaxes and hold them accountable for their actions. While tracking down the perpetrators of online scams can be challenging, the police are committed to pursuing all available avenues to bring them to justice. They are also working closely with Facebook to flag and remove the fraudulent page, although the group’s administrator has so far evaded detection and removal.

In the meantime, the East Haven Police Department has issued a strong call for community vigilance and cooperation. Residents are urged to avoid engaging with any content posted on the "East Haven Middle School" Facebook page and to refrain from sharing any of the group’s posts, regardless of their apparent content. Sharing these posts, even with the intention of warning others, inadvertently contributes to the spread of misinformation and amplifies the reach of the scammers. Instead, community members are encouraged to report any suspicious activity directly to the police department.

The East Haven Police Department remains committed to safeguarding the community from online threats and misinformation. They continue to monitor the situation closely, providing updates and warnings as necessary. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of online vigilance and critical thinking. By working together and remaining informed, the community can effectively combat these harmful tactics and maintain a safe and trustworthy online environment. The police encourage residents to rely on official sources for information, including the department’s own verified social media pages and website, to ensure the accuracy and legitimacy of the information they consume and share.
