New Google Earth AI tool could fuel misinformation

Google has recently introduced a powerful new feature for its Google Earth platform, integrating an AI image generator dubbed “Nano Banana 2.” This tool allows users to type text prompts that superimpose artificial objects or scenarios directly onto authentic satellite and 3D terrain imagery. While the technology is impressive from a creative standpoint, it has sparked immediate alarm among misinformation experts. The ability to “weld” fake, generated content onto real, geolocated maps grants these fabrications an immediate, dangerous layer of credibility. Because the imagery sits on a platform synonymous with objective, factual observation, the line between reality and digital deception has become blurrier than ever.

The danger of this tool lies in its potential to influence public perception during real-world crises. Journalists and investigators at BBC Verify successfully tested the feature, creating alarmingly realistic images of collapsed landmarks, fake military activity in war-torn regions, and fabricated humanitarian disasters. Experts like Henk van Ess have pointed out that a fake image doesn’t need to be perfectly convincing on its own if it is anchored to a genuine map coordinate. By pairing synthetic imagery with real-world geographical context, bad actors can manufacture visual “evidence” of events that never happened, turning one of the internet’s most trusted tools for verification into a potential weapon for disinformation.

Google maintains that it takes these risks seriously, noting that their AI is equipped with safety guardrails designed to block the creation of harmful content. They have also implemented invisible watermarks to identify manipulated files and encourage users to verify suspicious images using their Gemini chatbot or Google Lens. However, critics argue these defenses are insufficient. BBC Verify found that these guardrails are inconsistent; minor tweaks to a prompt—such as describing an execution platform in vague terms—allowed the AI to bypass its own restrictions. This suggests that the “safety filters” are more of a suggestion than a hard barrier, easily navigated by anyone determined to generate misleading visuals.

Even when users attempt to verify these images, the results are often unreliable. While Google’s detection tools work in some instances, researchers have already discovered ways to trick the Gemini chatbot into labeling these artificial creations as authentic. Furthermore, independent AI-detection software has, in several tests, failed to identify the doctored Google Earth content entirely. This creates a cycle of skepticism where, once an image is shared on social media, the average person has no reliable way to distinguish between a historical record and a manufactured lie. This erosion of trust is particularly devastating in fast-moving conflict zones where information is already scarce.

The implications for global stability and public trust are profound. Satellite imagery has historically been viewed as the “gold standard” of objective data—a way for NGOs, journalists, and citizens to see the truth in areas where governments might try to hide it. As geospatial analyst Bill Greer notes, this new AI capability threatens to undermine that trust entirely. If the public begins to assume that any satellite image could be an AI fabrication, it becomes much easier for bad actors to dismiss legitimate evidence as “fake.” We are entering an era where the constant presence of synthetic media may eventually make it impossible to use one of our most vital tools for truth-seeking.

Ultimately, this development highlights the tension between innovation and responsibility. While Google’s technology offers exciting possibilities for exploration and design, it simultaneously degrades the shared reality we rely on to navigate the world. When a platform as authoritative as Google Earth becomes a canvas for AI-generated fiction, the burden of proof is pushed onto the viewer, who is often ill-equipped to handle the onslaught of sophisticated misinformation. As we move forward, the challenge will be whether tech giants can keep pace with their own creations, or if the digital map of our world is destined to become a collage of verified facts and deep-seated, AI-generated illusions.
