Misinformation hits social media after fatal crash involving state trooper – Big Bend Sentinel

The tragedy that unfolded on U.S. 67 east of Alpine this past Tuesday remains a deeply painful reminder of how fragile life is, particularly when an investigation is still in its infancy. A head-on collision claimed the life of 28-year-old Erik Alberto Hernandez of Monahans and left 26-year-old state trooper Zachary Vasquez in critical condition. In the immediate aftermath, as emergency responders and medical crews fought to save those involved, the digital world began to move faster than the facts. While the community rightfully sought answers, the vacuum created by official silence was quickly and unfortunately filled by reckless speculation, untruths, and harmful rumors that rippled across social media long before anyone had a definitive grasp of what occurred on that road.

Among the more damaging claims circulating online were unsubstantiated accusations regarding the scene of the crash, specifically involving the presence of alcohol. Anonymous posts and even some early, irresponsible media reports floated theories that the deceased driver, Hernandez, had been intoxicated or might have had an illicit status. These claims were not only inflammatory but, according to eyewitness accounts, entirely disconnected from reality. A bystander who arrived at the scene shortly after the impact—well before law enforcement arrived—spoke to the Big Bend Sentinel to dispel these myths. She firmly stated that there was no evidence of alcohol or beer at the scene, noting that the physical landscape of the crash site simply didn’t support the narratives being weaponized by internet users.

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) has worked to provide a measured, factual account as the investigation proceeds, though the slow release of information often leaves a window open for misinformation to fester. We now know that Trooper Vasquez, based out of Alpine, was traveling with his dedicated K-9 partner, Guido, when the collision occurred. Both the trooper and Hernandez were wearing their seatbelts, which serves as a tragic footnote to a scene where, despite these safety measures, the consequences were devastating. While authorities have confirmed that Hernandez’s vehicle drifted into the eastbound lane for reasons that remain under investigation, the official report stands in stark contrast to the speculative noise that dominated community Facebook pages in the hours following the tragedy.

The human cost of this accident extends far beyond the official police report. Delilah Pacheco, the salesperson who recently sold the truck to Hernandez, remembers him not as a statistic or a rumor, but as a family man. He had been referred to her by a colleague and was visibly excited about his purchase, eager to take the vehicle home to his wife and children currently living in Mexico. Those who knew him describe a man with a steady job at Halliburton and a clear sense of devotion to his family. This portrait of a man looking forward to his future is a poignant contradiction to the baseless, character-assassinating claims that spread online when strangers chose to project judgment before the facts were even collected.

Equally troubling was the spread of false information regarding law enforcement involvement. Early television reports suggested that an Alpine police officer had witnessed the collision as it happened, a claim that prompted confusion and further wild conjecture. Alpine Police Captain Felipe Fierro later had to step in to clarify that no such witness existed; local officers arrived at the scene only after the fact to assist, not as observers of the crash itself. This clarification is a necessary reminder that in the heat of a tragedy, even mainstream outlets can fall victim to the pressure of the news cycle, inadvertently prioritizing speed over the high standard of accuracy that the victims and their grieving families deserve.

As the investigation continues under the guidance of DPS Lieutenant Elizabeth Carter, the priority must remain on compassion and truth. Trooper Vasquez remains in the intensive care unit in El Paso, and a fundraiser has been established to support him and his K-9 companion, Guido, throughout his recovery. As the community moves forward, it is worth pausing to reflect on the nature of our digital discourse. We have a collective responsibility to reject the urge to speculate when human lives are lost or forever altered. We owe it to the families—the wife and children of Erik Hernandez and the loved ones of Trooper Vasquez—to wait for the facts rather than letting the tragedy be buried under a layer of performative, and often false, internet commentary.
