Syracuse University Student Tackles Misinformation and Champions Ukrainian Heritage

Alexa Kocur, a junior at Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies (iSchool), is not your average college student. Juggling a demanding academic schedule with two on-campus jobs and a deep commitment to her Ukrainian heritage, Kocur embodies the spirit of a driven, multi-faceted individual determined to make a positive impact. Currently, she’s contributing to groundbreaking research aimed at understanding the spread of misinformation in the digital age, while simultaneously nurturing her cultural roots and paving the way for a future career in information security and project management.

Kocur’s involvement in the misinformation research project, funded by a $250,000 grant from Neo4j, places her at the forefront of a critical issue facing modern democracies. Working under the guidance of iSchool Professor and Senior Associate Dean Jennifer Stromer-Galley, the team is analyzing political campaign advertisements and social media messages from past and present U.S. political candidates. Kocur plays a vital role in categorizing this content, ensuring the accuracy and consistency crucial for data analysis. This experience has not only honed her analytical skills but also fostered personal growth, allowing her to engage in high-level discussions and contribute to research with real-world implications. The project offers a unique opportunity to delve into the complexities of political communication and understand how misinformation influences voter behavior in the increasingly digital landscape of political discourse.

Beyond her research contributions, Kocur maintains a busy schedule with two part-time jobs on campus. Her role as a content creator for the iSchool marketing team allows her to apply her communication skills, while her research position within the iSchool further solidifies her academic pursuits and provides valuable practical experience. This multifaceted engagement within the iSchool demonstrates her commitment to leveraging her skills and knowledge in diverse settings, enriching her understanding of the field from multiple perspectives. It is this combination of academic rigor and practical experience that prepares her for a successful future career.

Driven by a lifelong fascination with technology, Kocur’s decision to attend the iSchool was a natural progression. She recognized the ever-expanding role of technology in shaping society and sought an environment that fostered both intellectual curiosity and a sense of community. The iSchool, with its unique blend of technological focus and close-knit environment within the larger Syracuse University framework, provided the ideal setting for her to pursue her academic and professional aspirations. Her chosen major, Information Management and Technology, coupled with concentrations in Project Management and Information Security Management, demonstrates a focused approach to her future career goals.

Kocur’s Ukrainian heritage plays a significant role in her identity and influences her commitment to community engagement. As an active member of the Syracuse Ukrainian National Home, she dedicates her time to teaching young children about Ukrainian culture through engaging and creative activities. This commitment to preserving and sharing her cultural heritage underscores her belief in the importance of understanding one’s roots, even while navigating the demands of college life. It showcases a deep-seated desire to contribute positively to her community and foster a sense of belonging for others.

Furthermore, Kocur’s membership in Kappa Theta Pi, a professional technology fraternity, provides opportunities for networking and professional development. The fraternity offers a platform for connecting with like-minded individuals, expanding her horizons, and gaining insights into the professional landscape. This involvement reflects her proactive approach to building a strong foundation for her future career. It highlights the importance of networking and professional engagement in bridging the gap between academic pursuits and real-world application.

As she approaches her senior year, Kocur is already looking ahead, applying for internships and strategizing for her post-graduate life. Her ambition is to forge a career that blends her passion for project management and information security, envisioning herself leading projects that ensure organizations maintain the highest levels of security. This ambition showcases her desire to contribute to a field crucial in today’s interconnected world. It reflects a forward-thinking approach and a keen understanding of the growing need for robust information security measures in all sectors.

In conclusion, Alexa Kocur’s story is one of dedication, versatility, and a commitment to making a difference. From tackling the complex issue of misinformation to nurturing her Ukrainian heritage and building a strong foundation for her future career, she embodies the spirit of a driven individual determined to leave a positive mark on the world. Her story serves as an inspiration to fellow students and highlights the power of combining academic pursuits with practical experience, cultural engagement, and a strong sense of purpose. Her multifaceted journey at Syracuse University exemplifies the transformative potential of higher education and the importance of embracing diverse experiences to shape a fulfilling and impactful life.
