There’s plenty to go around, and anyone telling you otherwise is spreading baseless fear. This isn’t just about statistics; it’s about reassuring every Indian family that their daily lives won’t be disrupted by artificial crises fueled by deliberate misinformation campaigns.
Let’s break down where we stand with petrol and diesel. India isn’t just playing catch-up; we’re a major player on the global energy stage. We refine so much petroleum that we’re the fourth largest in the world and even export it to over 150 countries. This means we’re a net exporter, which inherently secures our domestic supply. Even in those cases, everyone got their fuel, and our oil companies worked tirelessly, even through the night, to restock. They’ve even gone a step further, extending credit lines to petrol pumps, moving from one day to over three days, just to ensure that no pump owner faces a cash crunch that might inadvertently affect supply. We have over 41 suppliers worldwide, and importantly, we’re currently receiving more crude oil than before, thanks to plentiful supplies from other parts of the globe, particularly the Western Hemisphere. So, any perceived gap has been more than adequately filled. Every single Indian refinery is operating at maximum capacity, over 100%, churning out the fuels we need. And to put your mind even more at ease, Indian oil companies have already secured crude oil supplies for the next 60 days. This isn’t just about today; it’s about a well-planned and continuously replenished supply chain, ensuring there’s no actual supply gap now or in the immediate future.
Then there’s the crucial topic of our strategic reserves, which has also been a target of misinformation. Some reports have dramatically claimed we only have a few days’ worth of stock, an alarming prospect for any nation. The truth, however, is far more reassuring. India possesses a total reserve capacity of 74 days. Currently, we have an actual stock cover of approximately 60 days. This includes not just crude oil in storage but also refined products and our dedicated strategic reserves held deep within underground caverns. Even with the ongoing situation in the Middle East, we are well covered for nearly two months. What’s more, our crude procurement for the next two months is also firmly in place. This means that for months to come, every Indian citizen can rest assured of a steady fuel supply, regardless of global events. The strategic cavern storage, while important, becomes a secondary concern when our overall supply chain is so robust. To suggest our reserves are dwindling or insufficient is simply ignoring the comprehensive and secure picture.
Moving on to LPG, the fuel that powers millions of kitchens across the country. Again, the Ministry firmly states: no shortage. In fact, a proactive step – the LPG Control Order – has boosted domestic refinery production of LPG by a remarkable 40%. This means our daily output is now 50 thousand metric tons (TMT), covering over 60% of our daily requirement of about 80 TMT. Consequently, our reliance on imports has significantly decreased, with the net daily import requirement now only
30 TMT. We’re producing much more of what we need at home. But we’re not just relying on domestic production; we’ve secured an additional 800 TMT of LPG cargoes already on their way from diverse sources like the United States, Russia, and Australia. These shipments will arrive at India’s 22 LPG import terminals, a big leap from the 11 we had in 2014. This means we have approximately a full month’s supply firmly secured, with more procurement happening constantly. Oil companies are diligently delivering over 50 lakh cylinders every single day. To prevent any hoarding or black-market activities during this period, commercial cylinder allocations have also been increased by 50% in consultation with state governments.

India already produces a significant amount of natural gas domestically – 92 million standard cubic meters per day (MMSCMD) out of a total daily requirement of
191 MMSCMD. This makes us far less dependent on gas imports compared to LPG. Our city gas distribution network has exploded, growing from just 57 geographical areas in 2014 to over 300 today. Domestic PNG connections have also seen a massive surge, increasing from 25 lakh to over 1.5 crore connections. This widespread transition was well underway long before the current global situation and reflects India’s thoughtful, long-term energy strategy. The message is clear: LPG supply is secure, and PNG is merely offering a superior, more convenient, and affordable alternative for Indian families.
