how climate misinformation spread across Australia

We live in an age where information, both true and false, spreads faster than wildfire. While the internet has connected us in unprecedented ways, it has also become a fertile ground for misinformation, especially concerning critical issues like climate change. A new Senate report in Australia has unveiled a disturbing truth: deliberate, coordinated campaigns are actively sowing seeds of doubt and fear, hindering vital climate action and putting public health at risk, particularly in local communities. This isn’t just about anonymous trolls on the internet anymore; it’s a strategically orchestrated effort to mislead the public, erode trust, and create conflict. The consequences are far-reaching, impacting not only our planet but also the health and well-being of individuals and communities.

The parliamentary inquiry, a rare display of bipartisan unity with support from Labor, the Liberals, the Greens, and Independent Senator David Pocock, uncovered these coordinated campaigns. Their primary objective? To delay crucial climate action, muddy the waters of public discourse, breed distrust in scientific consensus, and inflame societal divisions. It’s a calculated move to protect vested interests over the health of our planet and its people. Dr. Cara Platts from Doctors for the Environment Australia (DEA), a key contributor to the inquiry, articulated the dire human cost of this delay. She highlighted that Australia has endured 11 consecutive years of record-breaking heat, leading to increased heat-related deaths and an overburdened healthcare system. These aren’t abstract statistics; they represent real-world suffering and strain on our communities. The very air we breathe is at risk, and the systems designed to protect us are struggling to cope.

One alarming example of this disinformation strategy, as Dr. Platts pointed out, is the gas industry’s funding of campaigns promoting the use of natural gas. This might seem innocuous, but the reality is far more concerning. Recent peer-reviewed research has unequivocally demonstrated that gas appliances in homes significantly elevate indoor air pollution levels. This is especially detrimental to children, increasing their risk of respiratory problems and asthma. Imagine a parent, unknowingly trying to create a warm and comfortable home, inadvertently exposing their child to harmful pollutants due to misleading information. This is the insidious nature of disinformation: it leads people to make choices that are unknowingly detrimental to their own health and the health of their loved ones. The DEA advocates for a multifaceted approach to combat this, including stronger legislation, legal action, collective community efforts, and comprehensive public education.

The widespread concern about misinformation in Australia is palpable. A 2025 survey by the News and Media Research Centre (NMRC) revealed that a staggering 74% of Australians are worried about misinformation, making it the highest globally. Andrew Bray, National Director of RE-Alliance, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that a significant source of community anxiety stems from the lack of accessible, factual, and locally relevant information. “When there’s an information void,” Bray explained, “we just see it filled time and time again by false and exaggerated claims.” This void creates a breeding ground for anxiety and uncertainty, leaving communities vulnerable to manipulation. People are hungry for trustworthy information, and when it’s not readily available, they become susceptible to narratives that might serve ulterior motives.

The impact of this “climate obstruction playbook,” as the report describes it, is evident in the slowing down of renewable energy projects and a decline in public and political support for the energy transition. This playbook, used both in Australia and internationally, employs a recurring set of tactics to achieve its goals. By deliberately injecting doubt and spreading exaggerated claims, these campaigns aim to create inertia, thereby protecting existing, often polluting, industries. The “difference” between misinformation and disinformation is crucial here: misinformation is false information spread without malicious intent, while disinformation is deliberately fabricated and disseminated to deceive. The disturbing reality is that we are witnessing a concerted effort of disinformation, designed to manipulate public opinion and impede progress.

Local volunteer groups like Lighter Footprints, based in Melbourne’s inner-east, are on the front lines of this battle. As someone from the group noted, “Once people have got ideas implanted in their mind, it’s quite hard to shift them or to get them to open their mind to other possibilities.” This highlights the significant challenge of unlearning false information. The group emphasizes the urgent need to reach a “tipping point” where the momentum shifts back against disinformation. Their message is a stark warning: we are “asleep at the wheel” at a critical juncture, squandering a remarkable opportunity for a productive and bright future. The fight against climate change is not just a scientific or political one; it’s also a battle for truth and for the very future of our communities and our planet. It demands a collective awakening and a determined effort to counter the deliberate propagation of falsehoods with accurate information, unwavering commitment, and a shared vision for a sustainable and healthy future.
