The global landscape of information is undergoing a seismic shift, where the line between truth and fabricated reality is thinner than ever. To recognize those standing on the front lines of this digital battlefield, the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) is preparing to host its annual awards at the upcoming GlobalFact conference in Vilnius, Lithuania, this June. As we wait for the official ceremony, the organization has unveiled a list of finalists whose work showcases the vital importance of holding power to account and protecting the public from the rising tide of misinformation. These nominees are not just journalists; they are investigators, data detectives, and educators working to preserve the integrity of our shared reality.

The “Global Fact-Checking Award for Impact” category celebrates stories that went beyond the screen to spark tangible, real-world change. Among the finalists is Brazil’s Estadão Verifica, which dismantled a lucrative network profiting from vaccine misinformation, prompting action from federal prosecutors and health officials. In Poland, the Pravda Association utilized rigorous scientific research to expose misleading medical claims, successfully triggering institutional crackdowns on fraudulent promotions. Meanwhile, the Taiwan FactCheck Center demonstrated incredible foresight by identifying and debunking a dangerous wave of AI-generated “doctor” personas, effectively neutralizing a public health threat before it could spiral out of control.

Creativity is the secret weapon of modern verification, and the nominees for the “Creative Format” award prove that truth-telling can be as engaging as it is essential. NewsMeter from India turned the tables on bad actors by using AI to analyze AI, pinpointing deepfakes and health myths circulating on encrypted messaging apps. Spain’s EFE Verifica took a more human-centered approach with “Fake News, Real Victims,” a multimedia series that gave a raw, emotional voice to those harmed by conspiratorial lies across the globe. Similarly, Newtral, also based in Spain, provided a masterclass in investigative storytelling by debunking a viral, heartbreaking narrative about a woman supposedly kidnapped in Syria, peeling back the layers of a fabricated personal tragedy.

In an age where misinformation moves faster than any single newsroom can track, collaboration has become our most effective defense. The “Global Fact-Checking Award for Collaboration” highlights teams that transcended borders to tackle massive, systemic threats. A powerhouse coalition of Estadão Verifica (Brazil), la diaria Verifica (Uruguay), and Fast Check CL (Chile) joined forces to expose how digital platforms are reshaping historical memory regarding South America’s past military regimes. TjekDet of Denmark led another impressive cross-border effort with global partners to dismantle a sprawling network of deepfake pornography, while Maldita.es of Spain mapped out a massive, Russia-and-Vietnam-linked phishing scheme that ensnared unsuspecting commuters across 60 countries.

The “Gold Standard” category highlights the pinnacle of the craft—journalism defined by exhaustive research and unwavering transparency. The finalists here truly embody the ethics of their profession. Jordan’s ARIJ conducted a sophisticated investigation into climate change disinformation, tracing suspicious social media campaigns back to oil interests. In Nigeria, ICIR/FactCheckHub sounded the alarm on AI-powered Ponzi schemes that preyed on vulnerable citizens, highlighting the negligence of major social platforms in the process. Rounding out this category, Norway’s Faktisk.no demonstrated the courage required to look into the shadows, investigating the anonymous actors and online groups who sought to weaponize local school closure debates for political gain.

As international judges—a diverse group of experts representing voices from every continent—prepare to select the winners, we are reminded that fact-checking is more than just a corrective measure; it is a fundamental pillar of democracy. Whether through data-driven investigations, creative storytelling, or international partnerships, these finalists are effectively guarding the gates of truth. Their work serves as a powerful reminder that while the tools of misinformation are evolving, the commitment to transparency, fairness, and reality remains the most enduring weapon we have. We look forward to seeing which of these incredible organizations will take the stage in Vilnius this June to receive the recognition they so rightly deserve.
