From selling peanuts to saving lives: Researcher uses AI to combat health misinformation across Africa

Jude Kong’s journey — one of perseverance and innovation — parallels that of his family. As a Toronto professor, he blends engineering, applied mathematics, and insights from multiple countries to use AI and digital tools to address health issues. His work bridges the gap between industry and public health, offering a more equitable solution to the killers. In early 2020, he formed the Africa Canada Artificial Intelligence & Data Innovation Consortium (ACADIC) to leverage AI for pandemic preparedness and resilience. This innovation wasn’t just about technology; it was about empowering communities to advocate for better health informative processes.

Through initiatives like DigiCARE, Kong designed tools to monitor and predict outbreaks in affected regions. Worked closely with the Cameroon Global South AI for Pandemic and Response Network (AI4PEP) to provide real-time data on health challenges, like malaria and polio, in developing countries. His research highlighted how AI and local knowledge could bridge understanding gaps, creating a healthier, more proactive future.

Growing up, Kong faced a challenge where even math problems worked wonders. While he enjoyed solving simple addition problems at school, his mother emphasized the value of empathy and community. He shared this passion with his siblings, becoming a compiler of peanut sales, showing his dedication to survival skills.

Today, Kong’s work extends beyond his village, reaching Africa’s other communities. As aGlobal Affairs Canada scholarship recipient, he supports research, training, and collaborating with students from diverse Blackர, and other regions in the Global South. With AI unlocking new pathways for addressing public health issues, he remains at the forefront of innovation. By shifting from just numbers to understanding, he has shown that prevention can be one of the best answers in a chaotic world.

His journey is both inspiring and humble. Inspired by the power of technology to change lives, he’s committed to making AI—a tool with endless potential—more accessible and impactful. Through this, he shows that by uniting people with the right tools, any community can overcome barriers.
