Doctors worry that patients are increasingly exposed to medical misinformation

Understanding the Problem of Medical Information Disinformation

As a significant fraction of physicians report, ‘[i]61% of physicians say patients have been influenced by medical misinformation or disinformation in the past year.[/i]’ According to a study by The Physicians Foundation, ‘[i]nearly 9 in 10 doctors report misinformation is on the rise, with half citing a “significant increase.’/i]’ Furthermore, ‘[i]rural physicians report higher rates of patients affected than their suburban or urban peers.[/i]’ These findings raise concerns about the growing impact of disinformation and adds credibility to-fi (five-sixths) students who believe that both types of information are shaping patients’ healthcare choices and that disinformation can undermine trust in healthcare professionals.

The Rise of TikTok as a Source of Health Information

In recent investigations, ‘[i]stores have found that a significant percentage of Americans, especially those in Gen Z, get health information from TikTok.[/i]’ According to a new survey from The Physicians Foundation, ‘[i](days], suggesting that more than five in 10 physicians [report that their patients have been influenced by misinformation or disinformation at least a moderate amount in the past year.[/i]’ Attempts to address this issue have been intermittent, with a solid [86%] of physicians mentioning that ‘health misinformation has increased compared to five years ago, with half describing the rise as “significant.’/i] However, they remain uncertain about patients’ ability to access reliable medical information.

The Impact on Patient Care and Healthcare Teams

Only 10% said they lacked the necessary tools or support to engage with skeptical patients. This discrepancy highlights the need for more training and resources to address disinformation in clinical settings.

Rural physicians: A Concerning Issue

This trend underscores the importance of addressing disinformation not just in urban settings, but also in the rural population.
