Critics say Virginia anti-redistricting fight is a MAGA misinformation effort

Imagine a political chess match, but instead of rooks and knights, the pieces are congressional districts and voter demographics. Former President Donald Trump, in 2025, made a bold move in Texas, urging Republicans there to redraw their electoral map. His goal? To solidify the GOP’s control of the U.S. House of Representatives and potentially grab more seats in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. This wasn’t just a local skirmish; it was a national call to action, and it quickly rippled across the country, landing squarely in the battleground state of Virginia.

Now, some of Trump’s staunchest allies and fellow Republicans in Virginia find themselves in an interesting position. They’re actively leading the charge against a similar effort by Democratic lawmakers in their own state. It’s almost as if they’re saying, “What’s good for the goose isn’t necessarily good for the gander, especially when the gander is us.” On April 21st, Virginians are facing a special election, a referendum on a temporary constitutional amendment that, if passed, would empower the Democratic-led General Assembly to redraw the state’s congressional map. Early voting has been underway since March 6th, and the stakes are incredibly high. The potential outcome? A dramatic shift in Virginia’s House delegation – from its current six Democrats and five Republicans to a staggering ten Democrats and just one Republican. This mirrors a larger national trend, where Republicans currently hold a slight advantage in potential House seat gains through redistricting efforts, making every state’s battle that much more critical.

This intricate dance of political maneuvering has created some strange bedfellows and stark criticisms. Republican anti-redistricting advocates like former Governor George Allen and ex-State House Speaker Bill Howell, who spearhead “No Gerrymandering Virginia,” alongside U.S. Representative Eric Cantor and former Attorney General Jason Miyares, leading “Virginians for Fair Maps,” are decrying the proposed redistricting in their state as “antidemocratic.” Ironically, their vocal opposition to gerrymandering in Virginia stands in stark contrast to their silence on Trump’s initial push for the GOP to engage in similar practices in Texas. Dan Gottlieb, spokesperson for “Virginians for Fair Elections” – a group supporting the redistricting effort – points out this apparent hypocrisy. He labels the opposition as a “No” effort, part of what he calls the “MAGA misinformation machine.” Gottlieb believes this coordinated effort is deliberately designed to mislead and confuse voters, especially Democrats, about the true nature and importance of the ballot measure. He argues that it’s an attempt to obscure the reality of Trump’s “power grab” and the implications these shifting maps will have on the country’s political landscape, all while
questioning the funding behind this alleged misinformation campaign.

However, not everyone involved in the anti-redistricting camp sees it this way. Brian Cannon, a Democrat who helps lead “No Gerrymandering Virginia,” asserts that their efforts are not about misinformation but about upholding fair electoral practices, regardless of which party stands to benefit. He emphasizes that their mission is to call out gerrymandering across the entire political spectrum. Cannon believes Democrats could gain a substantial 40 additional House seats nationwide in November without resorting to gerrymandering. “I’m a Democrat,” Cannon states, “and I’ve teamed up with other Democrats and Republicans on No Gerrymandering Virginia to specifically call out the Donald Trump mid-decade redistricting push, as well as the Democrats’ mid-decade redistricting push in response; both are wrong.” He passionately argues that there are honorable ways to counter Trump’s influence, from safeguarding election integrity to protecting poll workers. “Rigging them is something we don’t need to do,” he concludes, drawing a clear line in the sand between legitimate political action and what he perceives as manipulative gerrymandering.

Proponents of the redistricting effort argue that the entire situation in Virginia is a direct response to Trump’s actions. They contend that if he hadn’t pressured Texas Republicans to redraw their map with the aim of securing five additional GOP House seats in November, the current campaign for redistricting in Virginia wouldn’t even exist. Governor Abigail Spanberger, who cast her vote in favor of the ballot measure, explained her stance to reporters, stating, “This amendment is temporary and responsive to this moment in time where we have a President who has gone to other states seeking additional congressional seats saying he is quote ‘entitled to them.” Her words echo Trump’s own boastful claims, like his August interview on CNBC where he declared, “We have an opportunity in Texas to pick up five seats. We have a really good governor, and we have good people in Texas. And I won Texas. I got the highest vote in the history of Texas, as you probably know, and we are entitled to five more seats.” Currently, Virginia’s 11 congressional districts are redrawn every ten years by a bipartisan commission composed of eight lawmakers and eight citizens, following the national census. The last redraw was in 2021, with the next scheduled for 2031. If the amendment passes, this bipartisan commission would resume its work, redrawing the maps after October 31, 2030, but in the interim, the Democratic-led General Assembly would have the power to make these crucial changes. Gottlieb, of “Virginians for Fair Elections,” champions this process as the most democratic option, allowing voters to directly decide on the proposed changes through public elections with 45 days of early voting. He frames it as a necessary defense against what he calls Trump and MAGA Republicans “forcing the commonwealth of Virginia to make” this difficult decision.

The messaging surrounding this contentious issue has been equally sharp. Opponents of the redistricting have resorted to tactics that critics label as misleading and even offensive. Some mailers have provocatively linked support for the ballot measure to historical voter suppression efforts against Black Americans during the Civil Rights Movement, utilizing imagery from the Jim Crow era. Others have taken quotes from prominent figures like Governor Spanberger and former President Barack Obama out of context, falsely implying their opposition to the measure, despite both actively advocating for a “yes” vote. Gottlieb strongly condemned these mailers, highlighting the deliberate use of “painful” and “scare tactics” aimed at “Black and brown folks who have been historically disenfranchised and targeted.” He believes these fear-mongering tactics stem from a deep-seated fear of losing the vote. This sentiment is amplified by individuals like Jon Baker, a retired chemistry professor and Richmond resident, who views the anti-redistricting leaders as merely “soldiers in the battle, but Trump is the general.” Baker, who voted for the amendment, sees the entire Virginia redistricting debate as a referendum on the Trump administration, a way to challenge what he perceives as an “out-of-control executive branch.” J. Miles Coleman, an associate editor at Sabato’s Crystal Ball, a nonpartisan political analysis newsletter, concurs, suggesting that ultimately, the vote will boil down to an “up-or-down vote on, basically, Donald Trump,” in a state where he lost three times. However, Coleman also acknowledges that the general public might not be fully aware of the involvement of Trump’s allies, or if figures like Eric Cantor, who resigned his seat in 2014, still hold sway in the public’s memory. As Leslie Caughell, a political science professor at Virginia Wesleyan University, aptly summarized, Trump plays a pivotal role. The degree to which he draws attention to this complex issue will likely determine its outcome, as most Virginians, she believes, are likely unaware of the full scope of the debate. Trump’s relative silence on the Virginia redistricting thus far only adds another layer of intrigue to this high-stakes political drama.
