Corus rebuts misinformation about future of Global News in Alberta after layoffs

The Canadian media landscape was rocked this week by a wave of sobering news from Corus Entertainment, the parent company behind Global News. Following a difficult round of layoffs that saw 43 positions eliminated nationally—28 of which were in Alberta alone—the company found itself caught in a different kind of crisis: a firestorm of misinformation. As the dust settled on the staff reductions, which hit critical roles like technical control room staff, producers, and editors, a dangerous rumor began to circulate online. The whisper, amplified by social media accounts and, remarkably, an AI-generated summary, falsely claimed that Global News was shuttering its local television production in Calgary and Edmonton entirely and moving all operations to Toronto.

This misinformation spread with alarming speed, causing genuine distress among viewers who rely on these stations for their daily information. The confusion was further stoked when a popular local blog shared a screenshot of an AI-generated overview that stated, quite incorrectly, that local newscasts were being killed off and that all anchor roles were being relocated. In an era where digital audiences are increasingly conditioned to expect the worst regarding the survival of local media, the claim was accepted by many as fact. This confusion reflects a broader, modern anxiety about the fragility of local journalism, making the public particularly susceptible to click-driven rumors that present layoffs as a total collapse of service.

Corus Entertainment eventually issued a formal response to quell the panic, characterizing the claims as explicitly false. A company spokesperson clarified that while some technical production functions are being centralized in Toronto to streamline operations, the identity of their Alberta stations remains intact. They emphasized that Calgary and Edmonton will continue to operate with their own dedicated anchors, producers, and local newsgathering teams. The company insists that these structural changes are a strategic effort to “reduce overlap” and allocate resources more efficiently, maintaining that they still provide more hours of local news in Alberta than any other broadcaster.

The staff at Global News, caught in the middle of these professional and digital upheavals, took to social media to act as the primary voice of truth. Reporters and meteorologists, many of whom were processing the loss of their own colleagues, actively corrected the record on platforms like X. By stating clearly that “Global News is not leaving Alberta,” they attempted to preserve the trust they have spent years building with their viewers. Their efforts were essential in mitigating the damage, as they provided a human face to the company’s internal restructuring, confirming to their audience that the journalists they see on screen every night are still there, living and working in their communities.

Experts examining the situation argue that this entire ordeal serves as a cautionary tale about the high cost of silence. Shannon Larkins, a communications specialist, noted that by failing to provide a proactive and detailed explanation early on, Corus created a “communication vacuum.” When organizations hesitate to control the narrative during times of upheaval, they essentially forfeit their right to define the reality of their own business. In this case, the delay allowed speculative claims—or in the case of the AI summary, hallucinatory data—to rush in and fill the void. Larkins suggests that had the company been transparent from the start about exactly what was changing and, more importantly, what was stayng the same, they could have prevented the public outcry that followed.

Ultimately, the events of this week highlight the intersection of corporate instability and the rapid, often reckless nature of modern information gathering. While the layoffs themselves represent a legitimate and painful trend in the Canadian media industry, the panic surrounding these supposed closures speaks to a deep, collective fear of losing our local voices. Moving forward, the lesson for major media houses is clear: in an age where AI-generated errors can go viral in minutes, companies can no longer afford to be reactive. Clear, proactive communication is not just a PR strategy anymore; it is a necessity for keeping the public informed and protecting the integrity of the newsrooms that remain.
