‘Completely off the rails’: TikTok is scaling back its AI summaries feature after it creates bizarre and inaccurate captions — as if TikTok wasn’t bad enough for misinformation already

Oh, TikTok! You know, that app where we spend hours scrolling through everything from dancing trends to cooking hacks, right? Well, they’ve been dabbling with something a bit new and, honestly, a bit wild: AI-generated summaries for their videos. Imagine watching a clip and then, underneath, a little AI-powered caption trying to tell you what’s going on. Sounds pretty cool in theory, like having a super-smart assistant who can instantly explain what you’re seeing. But in practice? Let’s just say it’s been less “super-smart assistant” and more “confused robot with a vivid imagination.”

The problem is, these AI summaries have been hilariously, and sometimes frustratingly, inaccurate. We’re talking about a level of inaccuracy that makes you wonder if the AI actually watched the same video you did, or if it was having a fever dream. A perfect example, and one that really makes you scratch your head, is a video of Charli D’Amelio, a huge celebrity on the platform, literally just talking to the camera. What did the AI caption say? Brace yourself: “a collection of various blueberries with different toppings.” Blueberries! Seriously? How do you get from a human being speaking to a collection of fruit? Then there’s another gem, a dog-training video – something pretty straightforward, you’d think. Instead, the AI decided it was “a captivating display of intricate origami art, meticulously folded from a single sheet.” Origami! It’s like the AI developed a sudden passion for paper crafts and completely ignored the adorable canines.

These aren’t isolated incidents, either. A quick peek around social media, and you’ll find people sharing these baffling AI blunders. Someone posted a picture that clearly showed two cats, minding their own business. The AI? It saw “a person demonstrating an impressive new robot arm with multiple dexterous fingers.” You can almost hear the exasperated sighs from users. One Redditor perfectly summed it up, calling the captions “completely off the rails,” while another simply said they were seeing “garbage that has nothing to do with the video.” It’s not just funny, it’s also distracting. Imagine trying to read the actual caption or comments, but your eyes keep getting drawn to some bizarre AI summary about calligraphy when you’re watching a horse race. It’s like having a little troll in your app, constantly whispering nonsensical things.

Now, you might be thinking, “But wait, isn’t AI supposed to be good at recognizing things?” And you’d be right! Identifying objects and even actions in images and videos is usually something AI excels at. It’s why we have things like Google Photos recognizing your friends or smart security cameras flagging packages. So, what went so wrong with TikTok’s version? It’s a bit of a mystery, but clearly, for many users, the experience has been far from reliable. We’ve seen screenshots (and, of course, you always have to take online screenshots with a grain of salt, but these seem pretty consistent with the trend) where a Kentucky Derby horse race was described as “showcasing an intricate piece of calligraphy,” or a cooking video, showing an overhead shot of a simple gray pan, somehow became “a single ball bouncing and rolling on a green surface.” It’s like the AI took a holiday from reality.

Because of this constant stream of head-scratching inaccuracies and outright hallucinations, TikTok has wisely decided to pump the brakes on this particular AI feature. They’re not ditching AI entirely – that would be pretty impossible in today’s tech landscape – but they’re scaling back. Instead of trying to summarize the entire content of a video, which proved to be a real challenge for their current AI, they’re going to limit its role to something more manageable: identifying products within videos. That makes a lot more sense, right? If the AI can accurately spot a specific brand of sneakers or a type of makeup, that’s genuinely helpful for users and for advertising. But trying to get it to understand the nuanced context of a dog training session or a celebrity interview? That’s a whole different ball game.

This whole TikTok saga is a really important reminder in our increasingly AI-driven world. While AI is being integrated into more and more aspects of our digital lives, from our phones to professional software, the issue of “hallucinations” and errors remains a significant hurdle. AI companies, understandably, don’t always like to highlight these flaws, but they’re very real, as TikTok users have found out. Whether you’re relying on AI to summarize a fun video or, even more critically, to help with a legal document or medical information, the takeaway is clear: always, always run additional checks. Treat AI’s output as a helpful starting point, a suggestion, but never as gospel truth. Our human brains, with all their quirks and limitations, are still the best arbiters of what’s real and what’s a blueberry-loving AI’s wild fantasy.
