Christian leaders challenge Paul Marshall over climate misinformation on GB News

In an era where the fabric of public discourse feels increasingly frayed, a coalition of over 120 prominent Christian leaders—including several bishops and the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams—felt compelled to take a stand. They directed an open letter to Sir Paul Marshall, an influential hedge fund manager and media mogul who also identifies as a Christian. The goal was not to cast judgment on his success or his political leanings, but to address a growing sense of unease regarding the intersection of his immense media influence and the urgent reality of the climate crisis. The signatories sought transparency regarding Marshall’s financial stakes in the fossil fuel industry, alongside a candid conversation about the volume of climate skepticism broadcast through his media outlets, particularly GB News. Despite their call for dialogue, Marshall has remained largely silent on his personal investments and has, thus far, declined to engage directly with the group.

The heart of this concern isn’t found in a critique of capitalism, but in a dedication to truth. Marshall’s influence, reaching into homes through GB News, The Spectator, and UnHerd, is undeniable, making him a powerful arbiter of public opinion. However, observers have pointed to a worrying trend: during the 2024 general election alone, research identified nearly a thousand instances on GB News where climate science or climate action was undermined. When news and commentary platforms platform the rhetoric of groups historically backed by fossil fuel interests—industries long criticized for obfuscating the dangers of global heating—the public suffers. It creates a skewed reality where evidence is treated as a matter of opinion, and the scientific consensus is treated as a political inconvenience rather than an existential warning.

The discord between Marshall’s publicly stated views and the broader economic reality is particularly sharp. While he has claimed that the transition to “Net Zero” threatens the UK’s industrial base and energy security, the prevailing evidence suggests the opposite. Decarbonization is increasingly seen as a vital economic engine—a pathway to long-term savings, enhanced national security, and improved public health. To frame the shift toward cleaner energy as an act of “wrecking” the economy ignores the massive innovation and growth potential of the green sector. When voices as loud as Marshall’s prioritize a narrative of decline over the opportunity for a safer future, they make it exponentially more difficult for society to reach a necessary, evidence-based consensus on how to navigate the climate crisis with courage.

For the Christian leaders involved, this is fundamentally an issue of moral discipleship. The mandate to “love thy neighbor” is not limited to personal kindness; it is a call to protect the world that sustains all life. As the planet warms, the consequences—from erratic weather patterns and food insecurity to the mass displacement of the most vulnerable—disproportionately impact those who have the fewest resources to adapt. To ignore these realities is to ignore the plight of the neighbor. The Church has a historic legacy of tackling the impossible, not by doing what is easy, but by doing what is right and necessary to protect the sanctity of life. Refusing to address climate change head-on stands in stark contradiction to the Christian ethic of stewardship and justice.

The responsibility, however, extends beyond any single individual. If the Church wants to maintain its moral voice on this issue, it must hold itself to the same standard of transparency it demands of others. UK Christian institutions hold billions of pounds in assets and investments, and while significant strides have been made to divest from fossil fuels, there is a remaining, profound opportunity to move from mere avoidance to active transformation. By reallocating these resources into sustainable, circular-economy solutions, the Church can move beyond passive ethics and into a proactive commitment to a greener, more resilient, and more equitable global society.

This is the purpose behind the Green Investment Declaration, a movement inviting church bodies to pledge a portion of their investments toward climate solutions. In an age of widespread misinformation, where the truth often feels like a moving target, this act serves as a quiet but powerful witness to the Church’s faith. Investing in a transition away from the causes of global overheating is a practical, hopeful, and necessary application of the belief that the future is something we are called to build with care. By committing finances to the technologies and communities that will foster a healthier planet, Christian institutions can turn their prayers for the world into tangible, lasting actions for the common good.
