AZ education leaders form new coalition to advocate for public schools

Let’s talk about our public schools, not with the usual complaints, but with a fresh perspective – one that celebrates the incredible work happening every day. Lately, it feels like our public education system has been under attack, facing a barrage of negative headlines, dwindling student numbers, and the rise of alternatives like charter schools. It’s no secret that many districts are grappling with the tough decisions of school closures, a gut-wrenching prospect for any community. We’ve all seen the reports from outlets like ABC15, detailing these difficult realities. But beyond the numbers and the bad news, there’s a deeper issue: a widespread misunderstanding and even misinformation about what public schools are truly about.

Imagine being a school leader, pouring your heart and soul into creating the best possible environment for students, only to constantly hear accusations of mismanaging funds or lacking transparency. Dr. Michael Winters, the superintendent for Saddle Mountain Unified, knows this feeling all too well. He, along with many of his colleagues, understands that despite rigorous audits and dedicated efforts, the public perception often doesn’t align with the truth. It’s a disheartening situation, one that prompted Dr. Winters and Dr. Kimberly Guerin, the superintendent of the Madison Elementary School District, to take a stand. They decided it was time to change the narrative, to move beyond simply “keeping their heads down and doing the work,” as Dr. Guerin aptly puts it, and to actively champion the good news.

What does it mean to “keep our heads down and do the work” in public education? It means teachers arriving early and staying late, crafting engaging lessons, and going above and beyond to support every student. It means administrators tirelessly tackling budgets, staffing, and community engagement. It means school staff from custodians to bus drivers, all playing their part in creating a safe and nurturing environment. For too long, this dedication has gone unnoticed by the wider public, overshadowed by sensationalized stories and often unfair criticism. We’ve operated in silos, each district, each school, dealing with challenges and celebrating successes in isolation. But as Dr. Guerin points out, this individual effort, while noble, only reaches so far. It’s like whispering into a hurricane – the message gets lost in the noise.

This realization sparked a powerful idea: what if all these dedicated individuals, these passionate leaders, came together? And that’s exactly what they did. A new coalition, the Coalition for Arizona Public Schools, has emerged, bringing together superintendents from across the Valley and beyond, alongside passionate school advocates and supportive business partners. They recently held a summit, a gathering of brilliant minds all focused on one common goal: to proudly showcase the incredible things happening in their schools. Their plan is simple yet profound: to proactively spread positive stories, to counter misinformation with facts and context, and to bridge the gap between what’s truly happening in public education and what the public perceives.

Dr. Winters articulates their proactive approach perfectly: “If there’s a news story or a politician says something, we can respond, and our goal is to respond within 24-48 hours to either provide the truth or more explanation and the context around things.” This isn’t about shying away from challenges or ignoring areas for improvement; it’s about presenting a balanced and honest picture. It’s about providing the full story, the nuance that often gets lost in soundbites and headlines. For too long, educators have felt like they’ve been playing defense, constantly reacting to negative narratives. This coalition aims to shift to offense, to proactively share the triumphs, the innovations, and the profound impact public schools have on countless lives.

The past few years have certainly been a wild ride for public education. The COVID-19 pandemic threw unprecedented challenges at schools, forcing rapid adaptations and highlighting inequities. Simultaneously, the landscape of “school choice” has expanded, with the growth of charter schools and initiatives like the Universal Empowerment Scholarship Accounts, which has further fueled the debate around public school funding and efficacy. Dr. Guerin, with her 33 years of experience, sadly notes, “In my 33 years in public education, I have found that public education has been somewhat politicized.” This politicization has made it incredibly difficult for the true mission of public education – to educate and uplift every child – to shine through. But with this new coalition, there’s a renewed sense of hope. They firmly believe that by coming together, by amplifying their collective voice, they can change the narrative. The work has already begun, and with plans to ramp up their efforts in the coming weeks and months, they are determined to ensure that the vital truth about public education, and their unwavering commitment to every student in Arizona, is heard loud and clear. They are a reminder that behind every statistic and every news story, there are dedicated individuals working tirelessly to build a brighter future for us all.
