Antisemitic Hantavirus Conspiracy Theories Are Spreading—and the Platforms Are Hands Off – Mother Jones

Cases, tragically, occur annually, with recent losses like Betsy Arakawa, wife of actor Gene Hackman, serving as stark reminders of its reality. Yet, despite these clear facts, the “Hebrew” claim has metastasized across social media platforms, a chilling testament to how easily misinformation can take root and propagate in the digital age.

More damningly, it exposes the alarming inability, or perhaps unwillingness, of tech giants to effectively combat coded hateful narratives. The insidious nature of these claims lies in their subtle bigotry; while rarely explicitly stating “hate Jewish people,” the insinuation is clear, leveraging historical prejudices against Jewish communities as a scapegoat. The deliberate opaqueness allows for plausible deniability, a tactic that makes these claims particularly difficult to directly challenge within the confines of platform policies designed to flag overt hate speech.

The anatomy of these deceptive posts is remarkably uniform, a copy-paste template designed for maximum impact and minimal scrutiny. The critical element here is Google’s AI Overview summary, which uncritically parrots the fabricated claim: “In Hebrew slang, hanta (חַנְטָה) means nonsense, a lie, a scam, or something completely fake.” This AI-generated pronouncement, appearing with an authoritative sheen, then cites X’s in-house AI chatbot, Grok, and a now-deleted Reddit thread as its sources. Similarly, Instagram’s AI search function for “What does Hanta mean in Hebrew” yields an almost identical, false summary. This reliance on AI, which often scrapes and synthesizes existing web content without critical discernment, creates a feedback loop of misinformation, lending an undeserved credibility to outright fabrications. The fact that these claims became a trending topic on X, fueled by posts from individuals with often negligible followerships, underscores the profound algorithmic susceptibility to fabricated narratives. One post by “Divinely Sierra,” an influencer, garnered over two million views, adding a disclaimer a day later to distance herself from antisemitism while maintaining the “scripted reality” narrative. Another post, from a niche hunting influencer with typically low engagement, surprisingly amassed nearly 200,000 views, cynically overlaid with audio from the Jewish folk song “Hava Nagila” to underscore the insinuation.

What makes this particular spread fascinating, and perhaps more troubling, is its largely grassroots nature. Unlike many viral misinformation campaigns that ride on the coattails of prominent public figures, this one gained traction primarily through individuals with relatively small digital footprints. While a few recognizable personalities, such as shock jocks Adam Carolla and Dr. Drew, did discuss the claim in a YouTube video (later removed by TikTok), and far-right comedian JP Sears shared versions on X and Facebook, their reach wasn’t significantly greater than some of the smaller influencers. This demonstrates a disturbing evolution in how conspiracy theories propagate: they no longer solely rely on established channels of influence but can organically fester and explode through a decentralized network of ordinary users, amplified by algorithmic biases. The implications are profound, as it means even seemingly innocuous online communities can become unwitting conduits for harmful narratives, making identification and intervention far more challenging for platform administrators.

Dr. Ghil’ad Zuckermann, a renowned linguist, cogently explained that the theory hinges on conflating the Korean river name “Hantaan” with “khárta (חרטא),” a common Israeli slang term meaning “bullshit, nonsense.” He points out the graphic similarity between the Hebrew letters for “N” and “R” as a potential source of this confusion, albeit one that is conveniently exploited. Zuckermann also notes the existence of another Israeli slang term, “khantarísh (חנטריש),” meaning “nonsense, worthless person, bullshitter,” which theoretically could be shortened to “khánta.” However, he emphatically states that despite knowing “hundreds of thousands speakers of the Israeli language,” he has “never heard any of them saying khánta, whereas khárta is common.” This expert testimony utterly demolishes the linguistic foundation of the conspiracy theory, revealing it to be a deliberate fabrication, designed to exploit perceived similarities for nefarious purposes.

However, the situation with X (formerly Twitter) under Elon Musk is more ambiguous. While they maintain “nominal policies against ‘hateful conduct,'” studies have documented a “consistent spike” in hate speech since Musk’s acquisition. Despite a recent pledge to British regulators to combat hateful content, the efficacy of these commitments remains to be seen. YouTube, with its policies against “misleading or deceptive content with serious risk of egregious harm,” struggles to categorize these claims, as their harm isn’t always immediately manifest or direct. Meta (Facebook, Instagram, Threads) acknowledges the issue, stating they are “reviewing the content” and will “take action against anything that violates our policies.” However, their primary approach, as they reiterated, is to empower users through features like “Community Notes” to add context to potentially misleading posts, operating on the principle that they “shouldn’t be the arbiters of truth.” While this user-driven approach has merits, it also places a significant burden on individuals to identify and correct misinformation, often leaving the initial spread unchecked and allowing hateful narratives to gain traction before any corrective measures can be applied. The hantavirus conspiracy theory serves as a stark reminder of the complex and evolving challenges social media platforms face in policing their vast digital landscapes for subtle, yet insidious, forms of hate and deception.
