Woman Impersonating Doctor Charged with Fraudulent Marriage to Physician

Doctor Deceived into Marriage with Woman Posing as Fellow Physician

A shocking case of marital deception has come to light in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, where a doctor was allegedly tricked into marrying a woman who falsely claimed to be a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) graduate. The woman, identified as Diksha Barfe, along with her parents, Ramdas and Vaishali Barfe, and an intermediary, Ankush Kanade, are now facing charges of cheating and breach of trust.

Dr. Nilesh Sathe, a 31-year-old BAMS and MD degree holder, owns and operates a hospital at the Kamalapur-Ranjangaon junction. He was introduced to Diksha through Ankush Kanade, a longtime acquaintance who owns a clothing store adjacent to Dr. Sathe’s hospital. Kanade, who is related to Diksha’s mother, facilitated the exchange of biodata between the families.

The biodata provided by Diksha’s family falsely stated that she was in her final year of BAMS studies at Mahamaya Technical University, Noida. This claim, appealing to Dr. Sathe and his family’s preference for a medically qualified bride, paved the way for the marriage. The wedding ceremony took place on March 31, 2023, at Amrapali Buddha Vihar.

The deception unraveled four months into the marriage when Dr. Sathe, believing his wife shared his medical background, offered her a separate cabin in his hospital to examine female patients. Diksha’s inability to perform the expected duties led her to abruptly leave and return to her parents’ home in Bajajnagar. This sudden departure raised suspicions, prompting Dr. Sathe to investigate Diksha’s educational credentials.

Dr. Sathe’s inquiries with Mahamaya Technical University revealed the shocking truth: Diksha had never been a student there and had only completed her 12th-grade education. The revelation sparked conflict between the two families, culminating in Dr. Sathe seeking legal recourse.

Following a court order, the MIDC Waluj police registered a case against Diksha, her parents, and Ankush Kanade on December 27th. The accused are facing charges of cheating and breach of trust. Police Sub-Inspector Raosaheb Kakad is leading the investigation into the matter. This incident highlights the vulnerability of individuals seeking life partners through intermediaries and underscores the importance of thorough background checks.

The case raises several questions about the motivations behind the elaborate deception. Were Diksha and her family driven by social pressure or financial gain? Did they believe the lie would remain undetected indefinitely? These questions will be central to the police investigation as they attempt to unravel the full extent of the alleged conspiracy. The case also highlights the potential consequences of relying solely on information provided by intermediaries without independent verification.

For Dr. Sathe, the experience has been a deeply personal betrayal. Beyond the legal ramifications, he has suffered emotional distress and the erosion of trust. The incident serves as a cautionary tale, emphasizing the need for due diligence in matters of marriage, particularly when educational qualifications and professional backgrounds are key considerations.

The ongoing police investigation will seek to gather evidence and determine the roles played by each of the accused. The court will ultimately decide their fate based on the evidence presented. The case has generated considerable public interest, highlighting the prevalence of such deceptive practices in matrimonial alliances.

The incident also underscores the need for greater transparency and accountability in the matchmaking process. While intermediaries often play a crucial role in connecting prospective partners, it is essential for individuals to exercise caution and verify information independently. This can prevent such instances of betrayal and protect individuals from emotional and financial harm.

Finally, this case serves as a reminder of the importance of honesty and integrity in all relationships. Deception, regardless of the motivation, can have devastating consequences, eroding trust and causing irreparable damage. As the investigation progresses, the details surrounding this intricate web of deceit will continue to unfold, offering valuable lessons for individuals and families navigating the complex landscape of arranged marriages.
