Tyra Banks Sues Netflix for ‘False and Defamatory’ Portrayal in ‘America’s Next Top Model’ Documentary

Tyra Banks has officially taken legal action against Netflix and the production team behind the recent documentary series Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, claiming that the project utilized deceptive editing to deliberately mischaracterize her. At the heart of the lawsuit is the allegation that what was marketed as a truthful, balanced documentary was, in practice, a calculated exercise in fabrication. Banks argues that the producers took a three-and-a-half-hour, open-hearted interview and ruthlessly cut it down to a 16-minute segment, carefully omitting her nuanced responses and moments of accountability to instead construct a sensationalist, defamatory caricature of her professional life.

For Banks, participating in the project was intended to be an opportunity for growth and reflection. She entered the process with the belief that the audience deserved a transparent conversation regarding the legacy of the show—one that honestly addressed both its groundbreaking cultural impact and its admitted shortcomings. She claims she went into the interview fully prepared to take responsibility for specific aspects of the show’s past that have drawn criticism over the years. However, she alleges that the final product ignored this spirit of reconciliation, opting instead to strip her answers of their vital context and reassemble the footage to push a pre-existing, hit-piece narrative that had little to do with the actual sentiments she expressed on camera.

The lawsuit shines a light on the high-stakes dangers of editorial manipulation, particularly regarding the show’s handling of heavy, sensitive topics. A core contention involves how the documentary addressed contestant Shandi Sullivan, who has spoken publicly about experiencing sexual assault while filming the show’s second season. Banks argues that the documentary unfairly portrayed her as a cold, predatory figure who allegedly ignored a contestant’s trauma for the sake of ratings and later feigned ignorance about the incident. The suit highlights a specific moment where Banks appeared to struggle to recall Sullivan’s story, a scene she claims was manufactured. She asserts that the unaired raw footage clearly shows her nodding and stating, “I do remember her story,” but that these specific clarifying moments were removed by editors to intentionally paint her as uncaring or deceitful.

Beyond the allegations of professional negligence, Banks is also challenging the documentary’s portrayal of her personal character, specifically regarding her relationship with former Top Model judge J. “Miss J” Alexander. The series included claims that Banks callously abandoned Alexander after he suffered a stroke in 2022. Banks characterizes this as a blatant falsehood, noting that producers never informed her that this specific accusation would be included, thereby denying her the basic journalistic courtesy of providing a response. She contends that had she been asked, she could have easily provided text messages and records of her outreach demonstrating her support for Alexander while she was residing in Australia. By withholding this information, she argues, the docuseries fostered an image of her as someone who discards her friends, damaging her personal reputation in the process.

The legal complaint also attempts to reframe the conversation around how Banks actually responded to serious issues on the set of ANTM throughout the years. In contrast to the “callous boss” persona presented in the documentary, the lawsuit details instances where Banks claims to have taken decisive action. The filing cites a specific incident involving a cast member’s inappropriate conduct, asserting that Banks did not stay silent; rather, she escalated the reports to network executives and insisted on the implementation of mandatory sexual harassment training for all staff and participants. By omitting these efforts, Banks argues, the filmmakers ignored the complexity of her administrative role, choosing instead to present an incomplete, one-sided narrative that served to vilify her for the sake of drama.

Ultimately, this lawsuit represents more than just a clash over airtime; it is a battle over the ethics of modern documentary filmmaking and the permanence of public image. Banks is seeking unspecified damages and a jury trial, citing significant reputational harm, profound emotional distress, and the loss of lucrative business opportunities stemming from the documentary’s release. As of now, Netflix has remained silent, offering no official response to these serious accusations. For Banks, the lawsuit serves as a final stand against a project she believes prioritized a destructive, fabricated story over the truth, forcing her to litigate in order to reclaim a narrative that she feels was stolen from her under the guise of behind-the-scenes reporting.
