Sultan Decries Social Media Misinformation, Urges Journalistic Integrity
Sokoto, Nigeria – His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has voiced deep concern over the escalating proliferation of misinformation on social media platforms, emphasizing its detrimental impact on societal unity and peaceful coexistence. During an audience with the newly elected executive members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, the Sultan underscored the vital role of journalists in combating this dangerous trend by adhering to the highest standards of professional ethics and verifying information before dissemination. He lamented the ease with which fabricated stories are presented as breaking news, rapidly reaching a global audience and potentially inciting discord within communities. The monarch urged media professionals to act as gatekeepers of truth and counter the spread of falsehoods.
The Sultan highlighted the destructive potential of social media misuse, particularly its capacity to fuel hatred and division. He condemned the actions of those who exploit these platforms to spread malicious propaganda and distort reality for their own agendas.
