Start Looking Now for False Dawn / Zodiacal Light Above Oregon, Washington

There’s a strange, almost haunting light that visits Pacific Northwest skies at this time of year, and most people have no idea it’s there. Astronomers call it the Zodiacal Light, but for generations it’s been known as the False Dawn because it can look, for all the world, like sunrise is already beginning to break. In Oregon and Washington, from September through late October, the phenomenon appears along the eastern horizon in the hour or so before true morning arrives. Imagine stepping out onto a dark beach near Bandon, Long Beach, Westport, Seaside, or Lincoln City and seeing a soft, tall cone of light glowing upward from where the sun will eventually rise. It isn’t quite bright, and it isn’t quite solid—more like the glow of a distant city reflecting off haze, except there is no city there. This is actually sunlight bouncing off countless microscopic grains of dust that orbit the sun in the inner solar system. It’s one of the most delicate celestial sights you can attempt to spot, and also one of the easiest to miss. Even experienced skywatchers, people who know exactly what to look for, often walk past it. The glow is that faint. Photographs exist, but not many, because capturing it requires a dark, transparent sky, no moon, no clouds, and no stray artificial light.

Still, for Pacific Northwesterners, autumn is prime time. The best views are along the eastern horizon before dawn, and while coastal towns have the advantage of generally darker skies than Portland, Seattle, Salem, or Eugene, the Coast Range can get in the way for viewers in both states. Inland skywatchers in eastern Oregon and eastern Washington often have a bigger advantage because their horizons are lower, the air is drier, and there are fewer trees and hills. But the coast isn’t hopeless—you just need a viewpoint with a clear sightline to the east. The glow may rise over headlands, forested hills, or dunes, so a beach with a wide-open eastern exposure is best. At its most striking, the Zodiacal Light will appear as a pale, eerie pyramid of brightness, growing straight up from the horizon. Some people describe it as a “false dawn,” and if you catch it without knowing what it is, it’s easy to feel a shiver of wonder—or confusion. It’s the sort of thing that makes you do a double take and ask, “Is that really the sun?” And then, minutes later, the glow fades, leaving only darkness again.

The secret to actually seeing the Zodiacal Light is timing, patience, and a stubborn willingness to wake up early. NASA recommends watching the eastern sky roughly two hours before dawn until about half an hour before sunrise. That is the window when the faint glow has the best chance of emerging from the darkness. EarthSky.org, a trusted resource for skywatchers, says for anyone in the northern hemisphere to start watching the early morning sky just before dawn, looking east. You don’t need to be doing it at the exact moment of dawn; in fact, the opposite is true. The goal is to catch a period when the sun is still far enough below the horizon that its rays are not yet brightening the sky, but the special alignment of the solar system is in the right position. The conditions have to be absolutely perfect: a fully dark, clear sky, no moon, and no nearby town lights. That last part is why coastal communities like Westport, Long Beach, Bandon, Seaside, or Lincoln City are often recommended—they offer darker skies and an open horizon. But there’s a catch: the Coast Range can block the view from many beach spots, so you may need to find a higher viewpoint or a stretch of beach where the eastern sky is not obstructed by hills or forest.

“Highly recommend to get away from city. Camera works well,” says Jim Todd, astronomy expert at OMSI. He notes that this same phenomenon shifts with the seasons: in spring, Oregon and Washington viewers can see it in the western sky after dusk; in fall, it moves to the eastern sky before dawn. Weather is a big factor, Todd says, and it can be like the aurora in that a camera can pick it up more easily than the human eye. A long exposure on a DSLR or even a modern smartphone placed on a tripod can reveal the glow even when it’s too weak to see directly. And don’t bother on nights when the moon is large and bright—the glare will wash out the subtle reflected sunlight. In late September and throughout October, there will be moonlit nights that are simply bad choices. You’re looking for a moonless morning, ideally one with a transparent atmosphere and no marine layer. The glow can appear as a broad cone of light, wider at the bottom, narrowing as it goes up, sometimes extending far up the sky if conditions are excellent. It can look so much like a city’s glow that your brain might try to convince you that downtown Portland or Seattle is just over the horizon, even when you’re miles away from any town.

So what exactly is this eerie glow? It isn’t a fire, and it isn’t a distant metropolis, and it certainly isn’t a hoax. According to NASA, the Zodiacal Light is caused by sunlight reflecting off tiny dust particles in the inner solar system. Those particles are the disintegrated remains of comets and asteroids—flakes of rock and ice that litter the space between the planets. As comets heat up and shed material, as asteroids collide and crumble, they leave behind countless grains of dust. The Earth moves through this debris field, and the dust catches sunlight and scatters it forward, creating a broad, faint glow along the same plane where the planets travel. That plane is called the zodiac, which is why the phenomenon is named Zodiacal Light. The dust is incredibly thin; if you gathered all of it into a single object, you probably wouldn’t have enough mass to make a decent-sized asteroid. But spread across millions of miles, it reflects enough sunlight to be seen from Earth under the right conditions. What is perhaps more surprising is how much trouble this dust causes for astronomers. The same faint glow that delights skywatchers is a nuisance for scientists trying to measure how dark outer space really is. Telescopes like the Hubble Space Telescope have been thwarted in their attempts to measure the darkness of the universe because the ambient zodiacal glow contaminates the data. It’s like trying to look at a dim star through a veil of almost invisible dust.

To get around that problem, astronomers have relied on NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft, which is now far beyond Pluto and well outside the inner solar system. From that distant vantage point, New Horizons measured the background light of space, and the faint signal it detected is roughly the equivalent of seeing a neighbor’s refrigerator light from a mile away. That’s how delicate this whole thing is. The colors you see in photographs of the Zodiacal Light—soft whites, yellows, sometimes a hint of orange—are not really from the dust itself; they come mostly from Earth’s atmosphere, which scatters and tints the light as it passes through. The dust particles are far too small to produce color; they simply throw sunlight in our direction. Why is fall the best time to see it in Oregon and Washington? It comes down to the angle of the zodiac with the horizon. In early autumn, the zodiacal band—the plane of the solar system—is nearly vertical in the eastern sky before dawn. That means the dust glow, which hugs that plane, extends upward from the horizon like a towering pyramid. In spring, the same band is tilted in the opposite direction, and the glow appears in the western sky after sunset, which is why the phenomenon has two poetic names: False Dawn when it announces the morning in fall, and sometimes False Dusk when it lingers after twilight in spring. Ancient skywatchers may have been genuinely confused. Imagine being a shepherd on a cold September morning, seeing a soft glow growing in the east hours before the real sunrise. It would be natural to think the sun was about to appear—only to watch the glow fade and darkness return for another hour.

If you want to try to catch it for yourself, start by checking the moon phase. The best window is a moonless morning, since the moon’s glare quickly outshines the faint dust. Once you have a moonless date, check the local forecast and look for clear skies not only overhead but also along the horizon to the east. For people in Portland, Seattle, Salem, or Eugene, you’ll need to travel away from the urban glow—possibly to the countryside, a high pass, or a remote beach. On the Oregon or Washington coast, towns like Westport, Long Beach, Bandon, Seaside, and Lincoln City are good starting points, but you may have to drive to a dark beach or park where artificial lights are minimal. The Coast Range can be a problem; if you’re below a headland or in a coastal valley, look for a higher elevation with a clear view inland. Set your alarm for about two hours before sunrise. Then give your eyes time to adjust to the dark for at least fifteen minutes. Don’t look at your phone. Don’t turn on a flashlight. Scan the eastern horizon for a faint, broad cone of light, narrower at the top and broader at the bottom. Some people describe it as resembling the glow of a distant city just below the horizon, but with no warm orange tint and no point sources of light. It can be mistaken for the first hint of dawn. Then the sky begins to brighten for real, and the Zodiacal Light may vanish.

A camera with a tripod and a long exposure can help you see it clearly, even if your eyes struggle. Jim Todd suggests treating it like aurora hunting: get away from the city, use a camera, and be patient. Photographs may show more than you see with the naked eye, so if you aren’t sure, point your camera and take a fifteen-second exposure at high ISO. If a soft glow appears in the frame, you’ve probably caught the False Dawn. This is one of those rare celestial events that doesn’t require a telescope or special equipment. It’s a naked-eye phenomenon that connects you with the ancient world, when every strange light in the sky had meaning. That it appears over the Pacific Northwest—a region known for clouds and rain—makes it all the more precious. We tend to think of Oregon and Washington as too soggy for stargazing, but September and October often bring crisp, clear mornings. And because the coast has some of the darkest skies along the western United States, you have a real chance of seeing it if you’re willing to wake up early. The glow itself is the ghost of creation, the remains of comets that came nowhere near Earth and asteroids that broke apart eons ago. Every time you see it, you’re looking at the solar system’s oldest housekeeping debris, swept by sunlight into a shimmering veil. It is also a humbling reminder that our planet is not alone in the cosmos; we are surrounded by leftovers, drifting and reflecting light in ways our ancestors observed long before science explained it. So if you find yourself on a dark beach or a quiet country road in the next few weeks, look east before dawn. Give your eyes time. Don’t rush. The False Dawn is not a dramatic spectacle—no streaking meteors, no green auroras. It is gentle, subtle, almost shy. But that is exactly what makes it special. You have to slow down to see it, which is something modern life rarely allows. The glow might be there, rising out of the blackness like a pale finger pointing toward the sun’s eventual arrival. If you catch it, you’ll join a small club of people who have seen one of nature’s most elusive sights. If you miss it, don’t worry—the dust doesn’t disappear. The Zodiacal Light returns in spring, shifting to the western sky after dusk, and this time you’ll know exactly what you’re looking at.
