In a proactive response to the escalating concerns regarding fake news and its widespread implications, the Safety, Security, Environment, Disaster Mitigation, and Management Office (SSEDMMO) of Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U) collaborated with the Public Information and Communications Office (PICO) to host a forum aimed at addressing the issues surrounding the dissemination of false information within the university community. Titled “Addressing the Spread of False Information and its Impact on our University,” the event sought to educate student leaders and select students from various colleges at the ISAT U Iloilo City Campus about the identification and implications of fake news.
During the forum, Jephthah C. Sustituido, an Information Officer I at PICO, delivered a crucial differentiation between “misinformation” and “disinformation.” He emphasized that fake news often features misleading headlines and originates from untrustworthy websites. This clarification was important to help attendees understand the various forms of false information they may encounter and stressed the need for critical evaluation of online content. By ensuring that students are equipped with the knowledge to discern accurate information from false narratives, the forum aimed to mitigate the negative impact of fake news on the university’s environment.
In conjunction with this discussion, Rommel Griffith P. Habaradas, another Information Officer I at PICO, presented an overview of the recently approved policy on Social Media Governance at ISAT U. This policy is designed to oversee all accredited social media accounts affiliated with the university. Habaradas addressed concerns from some organizations regarding potential restrictions on press and speech freedoms, reassuring participants that PICO’s primary role is to monitor these accounts to ensure content alignment, standardization, and effective risk management rather than suppress freedom of expression.
Furthermore, Vincent Rhiyn S. Amalay, the Head of the Students Discipline Office, introduced the proposed sanctions for students who engage in the dissemination of fake news. He clarified that these measures are not intended to punish students but rather to encourage responsible usage of their social media accounts and awareness of the consequences that false information can have. The approach aims to foster a culture of accountability among students while preserving their right to express themselves freely.
The forum culminated in an open forum session where students actively participated in discussions about the responsibility of combatting fake news. Attendees shared insights on their roles in maintaining the integrity and branding of their respective social media accounts, which are accredited through PICO. This segment emphasized the collaborative effort required from all members of the university community to combat the spread of misinformation effectively.
Overall, the forum underscored the critical importance of media literacy, responsible social media use, and awareness of the implications of fake news within academic settings. Through collaborative initiatives like this, ISAT U reinforces its commitment to fostering a knowledge-driven environment where students are empowered to discern truth from misinformation, ultimately contributing to a more informed and engaged university community.
