PinkNews Founders Deny Sexual Misconduct Allegations, Claim BBC Report Misleading

Benjamin Cohen and Anthony James, the couple at the helm of PinkNews, the world’s largest LGBTQ+ news website, have vehemently denied allegations of sexual misconduct brought forth by former and current employees. In an open letter, they denounce the accusations as "false, inconsistent, and malicious," asserting that the public has been misled by recent media coverage. The allegations, aired in a BBC documentary titled "PinkNews: Behind Closed Doors," paint a picture of a toxic work environment fueled by excessive drinking and inappropriate behavior by both Cohen and James. The couple claims an ongoing police investigation prevented them from fully addressing the accusations prior to the documentary’s broadcast, but maintain their innocence and criticize the BBC’s decision to proceed with the report.

The BBC documentary details accounts from over 30 individuals who allege a pattern of misconduct. Among the most serious accusations are claims that James kissed and touched a junior colleague who was allegedly too intoxicated to consent. The documentary also includes allegations of Cohen slapping an employee’s bottom at a Christmas party and general concerns about the couple’s behavior at work-related social events. The couple’s open letter emphasizes the distress the BBC report has caused them and their families, as well as the damage it has inflicted on PinkNews and its staff. They argue that the BBC disregarded the ongoing police investigation and presented a skewed narrative to the public.

In their response, Cohen and James reveal they filed a criminal complaint with the police in August, relating to alleged offenses committed against them, which they claim are connected to the recent reports. They insist they informed the BBC about the active investigation and their inability to comment on specific allegations due to legal advice. However, the BBC maintains the report was in the public interest and stands by its decision to air the documentary. The broadcaster states that more than 10 additional former PinkNews staff members have come forward with their own experiences since the documentary’s release. This further complicates the already charged situation and underscores the gravity of the allegations.

The documentary also explored claims that young female employees were pressured to act as surrogates for Cohen and James, adding another layer to the accusations of misconduct. The BBC claims to have reviewed a range of evidence, including formal complaints, emails, WhatsApp messages, and medical records, all of which allegedly support the accounts of the former and current employees. The volume and nature of the accusations paint a concerning picture of the workplace culture at PinkNews and raise questions about the leadership of Cohen and James. The couple’s denial, coupled with the BBC’s insistence on the public interest value of the report, sets the stage for a potentially protracted legal and reputational battle.

The controversy surrounding PinkNews comes at a time when the organization holds a position of significant influence within the LGBTQ+ community. Founded in 2005 by Cohen, then a technology correspondent for Channel 4, PinkNews has grown exponentially, playing a pivotal role in advocating for LGBTQ+ rights, including the legalization of same-sex marriage in the UK. The annual PinkNews Awards have become a high-profile event, attracting prominent political figures such as former Prime Minister Theresa May and current Labour leader Keir Starmer. The allegations of misconduct now threaten to tarnish the organization’s reputation and cast a shadow over its future.

The fallout from the BBC documentary has been swift, with a spokesman for Keir Starmer expressing concern over the allegations. The accusations against Cohen and James have also resurfaced past controversies surrounding PinkNews, including a 2017 article that sparked backlash for labeling Prince George a "gay icon" and a 2019 article explaining gender pronouns. These incidents, while distinct from the current allegations, contribute to a broader conversation about the organization’s editorial choices and overall conduct. The accusations of misconduct now pose a significant challenge to PinkNews’s leadership and its future as a leading voice in the LGBTQ+ community. The ongoing investigation and the couple’s strong denial promise further developments in this unfolding story.
