Pete Buttigieg briefly separated from children as target of ‘politically motivated’ false CPS report

Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently shared a harrowing account of a nightmare that has become a growing, dangerous trend in public life: being the target of a malicious, politically motivated hoax. In a deeply personal reflection, Buttigieg described a 24-hour period that he called one of the darkest times of his life, beginning when local authorities and Child Protective Services arrived at his Michigan home based on a completely fabricated report. The experience, which he likened to the dangerous practice of “swatting,” sought to weaponize the system against his young four-year-old twins. While the absurdity of the claims made them easy for officials to dismiss, the emotional toll on his family was profound and immediate.

The ordeal began with an anonymous caller who fabricated a grotesque story involving claims of violent crimes allegedly confessed to a stranger years ago. Because the allegation was specifically designed to trigger a high-priority emergency response, law enforcement and social workers were forced to act. Buttigieg was told that a forensic interview for his children had been scheduled, and, in a devastating directive, he was instructed that he could not be present for that interview and was ordered not to be left alone with his own children until things were cleared. To protect the kids and stabilize the situation, the children were sent to spend the night at their grandparents’ home, effectively tearing them away from the comfort of their parents under the cloud of a false emergency.

The cruelty of the situation was made even clearer once the investigators actually spoke to Buttigieg. After asking a few basic logistical questions—such as whether he had ever even been to the town in Alabama where the alleged witness claimed to have met him—it became immediately obvious that the accusations were entirely baseless. The officer on the scene recognized the report for what it was: a baseless, politically motivated strike. While the forensic interview with the children revealed absolutely nothing of concern and the authorities officially determined the report to be an outright falsehood, the fact that such a hoax was successful in separating a father from his children remains a point of deep, lingering frustration.

Buttigieg was quick to clarify that he holds no ill will toward the professionals involved in the process. He emphasized that the police officer, the CPS worker, and the interviewers were simply following the necessary protocols to protect children who might actually be in danger. They were performing their jobs—which are as demanding as they are vital—with humanity and professionalism. When faced with an allegation as serious as child endangerment, these agencies are trained to prioritize the child’s safety above all else. For Buttigieg, the tragedy lies not in the response of the authorities, but in the calculated decision by a stranger to weaponize that protective machinery for the sake of political harassment.

As a public figure, Buttigieg is accustomed to the typical pressures of politics, but this experience crossed a line that he feels must never be normalized. He noted that the hoax occurred shortly after he posted family photos for Father’s Day, suggesting a deliberate attempt to turn his private life into a battleground. The mix of rage and sadness he expressed is a sentiment any parent can identify with; the realization that someone, somewhere, thought it was acceptable to use his four-year-old children as pawns in a political game is deeply disturbing. He underscored that while he is a person who generally tries to remain calm and composed, the deliberate targeting of his family has pushed him past that boundary.

Looking ahead, Buttigieg has made it clear that he intends to hold the perpetrator accountable if they are identified. He is currently prepared to pursue both civil and criminal charges, not merely for his own family’s sense of closure, but to draw a firm line in the sand regarding what is acceptable in our society. He argues that even in the most polarized political atmospheres, there must be a common standard that families and children remain strictly off-limits. By sharing his story, he hopes to bring attention to the vulnerability of public figures’ families and the predatory nature of those who seek to use the protective arms of the state to wreak havoc on personal lives.
