Panic On Cruise Ship After 6 Guests Gain Access To Onboard System & Broadcast False Warnings

The cruise experience is often synonymous with relaxation, luxury, and the comfort of being in safe hands while traversing the open sea. However, for the passengers aboard the MSC Divina during its voyage from Marmaris, Turkey, to Naples in late July 2026, that sense of security was briefly shattered by a thoughtless act. While the ship cut through the Mediterranean, a group of six young men decided to bypass the rules and access the vessel’s onboard intercom system. In a display of profound immaturity, they broadcasted a series of fabricated, terrifying warnings to unsuspecting travelers. By claiming that the captain had lost control of the ship and that the vessel was drifting aimlessly, they deliberately orchestrated a moment of intense panic and confusion.

The prank, while localized to only two decks, had immediate and ripple-like consequences. In an environment where passengers trust the crew implicitly for their survival, the mere mention of a ship losing control is enough to trigger genuine fear. Some of the more distressed passengers, believing they were in immediate peril, reached out to the Operations Center of the General Command of the Port Authority of Rome. This escalated the situation from a mere nuisance to a formal maritime alarm, drawing the attention of the Italian Coast Guard and transforming what was intended as a “joke” into a serious breach of public safety and maritime order.

Recognizing the gravity of the panic spreading through the corridors, Captain Gabriele Russo acted with speed and composure. He quickly utilized the legitimate public address system to address the vessel, dispelling the rumors and clarifying that the ship was, in fact, operating perfectly. By identifying the origin of the false claims as the work of unauthorized passengers, the captain managed to restore order and calm the nerves of those onboard. His intervention was a vital step in preventing a full-scale stampede or a more widespread panic that could have resulted in actual injuries as passengers scrambled to react to the misinformation.

As the MSC Divina approached the port of Naples, the consequences for the six individuals became unavoidable. The captain, having maintained the integrity of his ship and the safety of his passengers, formally lodged a complaint against the group. This allowed local authorities and the Naples Border Police to intervene the moment the ship made contact with the dock. The transition from a relaxing cruise to a legal detention was swift; officers boarded the vessel, successfully located the individuals, and removed them from the ship. They were subsequently handed over to the relevant authorities to face potential charges for unauthorized access to internal systems and the provocation of a public alarm.

Following the event, the cruise line felt it necessary to reassure the public and current passengers regarding the security of their technology. An official spokesperson for MSC Cruises addressed the incident, clarifying that while the intercom was manipulated, the ship’s primary navigation and safety systems remained entirely untouched and secure. The spokesperson emphasized that the operational integrity of the vessel was never compromised and that the safety of the journey was maintained throughout. By distancing the prank from the ship’s vital technical operations, the line sought to prevent undue concern about their cruise ships being vulnerable to digital hackers.

Ultimately, this incident serves as a stark reminder that the freedom afforded to travelers comes with the responsibility of conduct. What these young men likely viewed as an amusing or rebellious stunt turned into a costly mistake that resulted in their removal from the ship and a permanent mark on their records. MSC Cruises confirmed that they have implemented immediate operational changes to ensure that such an intrusion into the communication system cannot occur again. For the rest of the passengers, the episode stands as a cautionary tale of how quickly peace can be disrupted by selfishness, and how vital it is for crew members to remain vigilant in protecting the safety and tranquility of their guests.
