Padres’ Adrian Morejon gets 40% trade deadline update after false Yankees report

As the Major League Baseball trade deadline looms this Monday at 6 p.m. EDT, the San Diego Padres find themselves at a fascinating crossroads that feels like a high-stakes poker game. In the front office, the decision-makers are weighing the temptation of long-term assets against the undeniable momentum of a team that has caught fire at exactly the right moment. With a stellar 8-2 run over their last ten games, the Padres have clawed their way to within just 1.5 games of an National League Wild Card spot. This surge makes the traditional “seller’s mentality” much harder to justify, leaving the organization to decide whether they should aggressively chase a postseason dream or continue to bolster their farm system for the future.

At the center of the trade deadline conversation is Adrian Morejón, a pitcher who has rapidly transformed into one of the most coveted arms on the market. ESPN analysts Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan have highlighted that the Padres are setting a very high price for his services, and frankly, they have every right to. Morejón isn’t just another body in the bullpen; he is a force of nature, consistently hitting 99–100 mph while maintaining a sharp 3.00 ERA across 60 innings this year. His ability to induce ground balls makes him an elite weapon in high-leverage situations, and because he is an impending free agent, he has become the most logical candidate to be moved before the clock strikes six.

The buzz surrounding Morejón has been electric, but it has also been plagued by the kind of misinformation that often swirls during the frantic final hours of the trade deadline. A report surfaced recently via USA Today claiming that the Padres had rejected a formal offer from the New York Yankees, which would have swapped Morejón for Yankees right-handed pitching prospect Will Warren. It was the kind of headline that sent social media into a frenzy, as fans and analysts alike began debating the merits of trading a proven bullpen arm for a young starter. However, as the dust began to settle, it became clear that the narrative didn’t quite match reality.

In a swift correction, The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty and Dennis Lin clarified that the reported trade proposal was, in fact, entirely fabricated. Citing an anonymous source familiar with the inner workings of the front office, they reported that the Yankees never actually extended a formal offer for Morejón. The suggestion that a Warren-for-Morejón deal was on the table and subsequently rejected was labeled as inaccurate. While the Yankees may indeed have an interest in adding more firepower to their roster, the “formal offer” that dominated the news cycle was nothing more than a rumor without a foundation.

This confusion highlights how incredibly stressful and speculative the deadline experience is for everyone involved. For players like Morejón, names appearing in trade rumors can be a source of immense professional and personal uncertainty. For the front office, the challenge is filtering out the noise while navigating the intense pressure to make the right move. The Padres are currently in a position of strength, holding two of the best relievers in the game. They aren’t in a situation where they need to dump talent to save money or pivot toward a rebuild; they are competing, and that reality fundamentally changes the value of every player currently wearing a San Diego uniform.

As we count down the final hours, the Padres’ strategy seems to be a careful blend of caution and ambition. Whether they choose to hold onto their elite relievers to push for that Wild Card spot or decide that the haul for a player like Morejón is simply too good to pass up, their decision will ripple through the rest of the league. Baseball fans love a good deadline drama, and the Padres have provided plenty of it. By the time the deadline passes, we will finally know if the front office opted to bet on the team they have on the field or if they chose to capitalize on the inflated trade market to build for tomorrow.
