Man Arrested for Fabricating Hostage Situation at Ohio State Highway Patrol Post, Triggering Highway Closure and Extensive Investigation

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio – A seemingly routine Saturday morning took a dramatic turn at an Ohio State Highway Patrol post near Ashville when a man falsely reported a hostage situation, prompting a swift and comprehensive response from law enforcement. The incident, which occurred around 11:30 a.m., involved 44-year-old Jeffrey Corby, who approached a trooper at the post on U.S. Route 23, claiming a person was being held at gunpoint inside a nearby vehicle. This alarming report immediately triggered a series of actions designed to protect potential victims and secure the area.

Responding officers quickly determined that the vehicle in question was, in fact, the same one Corby had driven to the post. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was unoccupied, and there was no evidence of any hostage situation. This discovery shifted the focus of the investigation from rescuing a potential hostage to understanding Corby’s motives for fabricating such a serious claim.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) emphasized the gravity of the situation in a released statement, highlighting the serious implications of false reports. "The Ohio State Highway Patrol takes false reports very seriously, as they divert critical resources from true emergencies," the statement read. This underscores the potential dangers of such actions, which can tie up personnel and equipment that might be desperately needed elsewhere. The incident also resulted in a significant disruption to local traffic, as U.S. Route 23 was closed in both directions from North Street to U.S. Route 22/West Main Street.

Following the investigation, Corby was taken into custody and charged with inducing panic, a third-degree felony under Ohio law. This charge reflects the severity of his actions and the potential widespread alarm and disruption they caused. Corby was subsequently booked into the Pickaway County Jail, awaiting further legal proceedings. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the legal consequences for those who make false reports to law enforcement.

The road closure, though disruptive, was a necessary precaution taken by authorities to ensure public safety while they investigated the reported hostage situation. The Ohio State Highway Patrol acted swiftly to secure the area around the post and to manage traffic flow, minimizing inconvenience to the public. Following the determination that the report was false and the arrest of Corby, the road was reopened, restoring normal traffic patterns.

This incident underscores the importance of accurate and truthful reporting to law enforcement. False reports not only waste valuable resources but also create unnecessary anxiety and fear within the community. The OSHP’s firm response in this case sends a clear message that such actions will not be tolerated and will be met with appropriate legal consequences. The investigation into Corby’s motives remains ongoing. As further details emerge, the community will gain a clearer understanding of the circumstances that led to this disruptive event.
