A Cry for Justice: The Ordeal of Baale Okunboye Gbadamosi and the Shadow of a Land Dispute

Imagine living in constant fear, your integrity questioned, your livelihood threatened, and your very safety hanging by a thread, all while navigating the opaque corridors of justice. This is the harrowing reality for Baale Abiodun Okunboye Gbadamosi, a respected community leader in Apena Village, Obada-Oko, Ogun State. His story is a poignant testament to the human toll exacted by land disputes, particularly when powerful figures are perceived to be pulling the strings. For years, Baale Gbadamosi has been embroiled in a bitter conflict with the traditional ruler of Obada-Oko, Oba Abiodun Olufemi Solaja, and his brother, Dotun Solaja. What began as a land disagreement has spiraled into a complex web of alleged intimidation, false accusations, and a disheartening struggle for due process, prompting him to make a desperate plea to Governor Dapo Abiodun to intervene and “save his soul.” His petition, dated May 6, 2027, is not just a formal document; it’s a heartfelt cry from a man pushed to his breaking point, seeking refuge from what he perceives as a profound injustice that threatens to consume him and his community.

The roots of this profound distress trace back to September 2021, when Baale Gbadamosi found himself facing grave allegations that would forever alter the course of his life. He was accused by Oba Solaja and his brother, Dotun, of committing a violent act: attacking a man named Lekan Jogunomi with a machete on a disputed parcel of land. The accusations didn’t stop there; they also claimed he stole Jogunomi’s wristwatch and damaged his vehicle. For Baale Gbadamosi, these charges were not only shocking but utterly baseless. He vehemently denied any involvement, insisting he was nowhere near the disputed land at the time of the alleged incident. “The allegations were baseless. I did not attack anyone, nor was I present at the scene as claimed,” he stated, his words ringing with frustration and disbelief. Despite his denials, the weight of these accusations was immense. He was subsequently arrested by the Nigeria Police Force, Zone 2 Command, Lagos, and arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Itori on charges as serious as armed robbery. This marked the beginning of a terrifying ordeal, leading to his remand at the Ilaro Correctional Centre, a period of incarceration that would leave an indelible mark on his life, before he eventually secured bail, a small victory in a much larger battle.

The legal labyrinth Baale Gbadamosi found himself trapped in took an unexpected turn with a crucial revelation that began to unravel the fabricated nature of the charges against him. A diligent follow-up investigation conducted by the police X-Squad in Eleweran, Abeokuta, unearthed a critical piece of evidence: the medical report, which was central to the accusations of assault, had been forged. On January 26, 2024, the State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta, officially disowned the document, unequivocally stating that it did not originate from their facility. This bombshell confirmed Baale Gbadamosi’s consistent claims of innocence and painted a damning picture of the machinations at play. Armed with this newfound vindication, the legal wheels slowly turned, and on July 1, 2025, Justice A. A. Babawale of the Ogun State High Court, Abeokuta, delivered a verdict that must have felt like a breath of fresh air: Baale Gbadamosi was discharged and acquitted of all four counts. This moment, a testament to the power of truth, should have marked the end of his nightmare. However, as he would soon discover, justice is not always swift, nor is it always complete, especially when powerful interests are at play.

Despite his hard-won acquittal, Baale Gbadamosi’s battle for complete justice remains far from over. The individuals responsible for forging the medical report, those who orchestrated his suffering and nearly robbed him of his freedom, continue to walk free. He claims that attempts to initiate prosecution against them have been met with frustrating inaction from the state’s Bureau of Public Prosecution (BPP). Repeated petitions to the Office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, which should be bastions of legal redress, have yielded no discernible outcome. “Till date, the Bureau of Public Prosecution has not issued legal advice to enable the arraignment of those involved,” he lamented, his voice reflecting a deepening sense of despair. This perceived stonewalling by legal authorities has emboldened his adversaries, who, he alleges, continue to encroach on his family’s land, destroying property and intimidating legitimate land buyers. This ongoing harassment, coupled with the lack of accountability for past wrongs, reinforces his fear that the scales of justice are heavily skewed against him, leaving him vulnerable and profoundly disheartened.

The impact of this protracted conflict extends beyond legal battles and into the very fabric of Baale Gbadamosi’s life and property. He recounts a deeply personal affront: a parcel of land he personally purchased, secured with police protection, and even meticulously fenced, was allegedly forcefully taken over and re-fenced on the direct instruction of the traditional ruler. This brazen act of seizure, he claims, is part of a calculated strategy to frustrate him and undermine his legitimate claims to his property. Furthermore, his company and other valuable properties located on the disputed land have reportedly been destroyed in what he sees as deliberate attempts to financially cripple him and weaken his resolve. The police, seemingly aware of the gravity of the situation, extended invitations to the monarch and his brother through their anti-land grabbing unit, an effort that, according to Baale Gbadamosi, was conspicuously ignored. This apparent disregard for official summonses only reinforces his belief that power and influence are shielding his adversaries from accountability, leaving him with no option but to go public with his plea.

In a desperate gamble born of profound fear and immense frustration, Baale Gbadamosi has made the difficult decision to speak out, to lay bare his torment to the world. “I can no longer sleep with my two eyes closed. I am calling on the governor to urgently intervene before something sinister happens,” he implored, his words laden with a palpable sense of anxiety and foreboding. This is not merely a plea for political intervention; it’s a human cry for security, for peace of mind, and for the fundamental right to live without the constant threat of harm. When confronted with these serious allegations, the Ogun State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Sina Ogungbade, confirmed awareness of the matter but dismissed claims of inaction, asserting that prosecutorial decisions are discretionary and guided by evidence. While he stated that “The ministry will do what is right in accordance with the law,” and that “We cannot be blackmailed or stampeded into taking a predetermined action,” his words, though legally sound, offer little solace to a man living in fear. As for Oba Solaja, when directly contacted, he refused to comment over the telephone, insisting on an in-person inquiry at his palace, a response that, while within his rights, does little to assuage the fears and anxieties of a community leader fighting for his very existence against a perceived powerful antagonist. Baale Gbadamozi’s story is a stark reminder that even after legal vindication, the battle for true justice and peace can be a long, arduous, and terrifying journey, especially when confronted by forces that seem to operate beyond the ordinary purview of the law.
