Government Shutdown Looms as Musk-Fueled Misinformation Derails Bipartisan Deal
Washington, D.C. – A bipartisan agreement to prevent a government shutdown crumbled on Wednesday, succumbing to a wave of misinformation propagated by billionaire Elon Musk. The collapse raises the specter of a shutdown just days away, with federal agencies bracing for potential disruptions and furloughs.
Musk, leveraging his social media platform X, ignited a firestorm of opposition among House Republicans against the stopgap spending bill painstakingly negotiated by Speaker Mike Johnson. The speaker, constrained by a narrow Republican majority, had collaborated with Democrats to craft a compromise capable of passing both chambers. Musk’s intervention, riddled with false and misleading claims, effectively torpedoed the deal. President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance subsequently voiced their opposition, further complicating the path to a resolution and increasing the likelihood of a shutdown.
The proposed spending bill encompassed $100 billion in disaster relief, billions in agricultural aid, and numerous other provisions, culminating in a 1,500-page document. Musk’s relentless campaign, exceeding 100 tweets, included a barrage of inaccuracies and distortions that swayed public opinion and pressured Republican lawmakers. This episode offers a glimpse into Musk’s potential influence as a newly appointed co-leader of a Trump-backed initiative aimed at drastically reducing government spending.
Musk downplayed the potential consequences of a government shutdown, suggesting that the country could easily withstand a closure lasting until January 20th. He erroneously asserted that a shutdown would not affect "critical functions." While essential services would indeed continue, a shutdown would have far-reaching consequences, halting the work of numerous government employees and delaying paychecks. Although Social Security payments and mail delivery would continue, the disruption to other agencies would result in significant lost productivity and economic damage. Previous shutdowns have cost billions of dollars, according to estimates from the Congressional Budget Office.
Among Musk’s most egregious inaccuracies was the claim that the spending bill included a 40% pay raise for members of Congress. This assertion, amplified by Musk and his "Department of Government Efficiency" X account, is patently false. Congressional salaries have remained stagnant since 2009 due to repeated freezes on cost-of-living adjustments. While the proposed bill did not include a COLA freeze, the maximum potential pay increase would have been 3.8%, a far cry from the 40% figure touted by Musk. Even if lawmakers had retroactively applied all 15 years of rejected COLAs, the increase would only be 31%, according to the Congressional Research Service.
Musk also propagated the false claim that the bill allocated $3 billion for a new NFL stadium in Washington, D.C. The bill actually transferred control of the existing RFK Stadium site to the D.C. local government for potential redevelopment, which could include a stadium. No federal funds were allocated for this purpose. While the D.C. government might eventually contribute local funds for environmental remediation or infrastructure upgrades, any redevelopment plan would require local approval and would not involve federal dollars from the stalled spending bill.
Furthermore, Musk falsely asserted that the bill shielded the January 6th committee, a claim that may have drawn Trump deeper into the fray. Musk cited a provision in the bill related to House data storage on external platforms, misrepresenting it as a measure to obstruct House Republican investigations into the January 6th committee. In reality, the provision aimed to clarify that House data stored on outside platforms remains under House control and subject to House rules and procedures.
Finally, Musk amplified a baseless claim that the legislation would fund “bioweapon labs.” This assertion is entirely false. The provision in question established regional biocontainment laboratories for biomedical research related to public health and medical preparedness, not for the development of bioweapons. This provision was part of the reauthorization of the Pandemic and All Hazards Preparedness and Response Act.
The spread of misinformation, fueled by Musk’s influential platform, significantly contributed to the collapse of the bipartisan spending deal, leaving the government teetering on the brink of a shutdown.
