Misinformation Spreads Online Regarding Rahul Gandhi’s Attendance at Manmohan Singh’s Funeral

False Claims Surround Congress Leaders’ Absence at Manmohan Singh’s Funeral

The passing of former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92, triggered a wave of grief and condolences across the nation. However, amidst the mourning, misinformation spread rapidly on social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), falsely claiming that prominent members of the Indian National Congress party, including the Gandhi family, were conspicuously absent from the funeral proceedings. These claims attempted to portray a callous disregard for Singh’s legacy and sow discord within the political landscape.

The viral posts, shared widely across various social media platforms, alleged that senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, had failed to pay their respects to the former Prime Minister. One such post explicitly stated, "Forget Sonia —even Rahul & Priyanka weren’t present at the last rites of Manmohan Singh. This is how they treat Congress members who don’t belong to the family." These accusations fueled a narrative of internal division and disrespect within the Congress party, suggesting a hierarchy that prioritized family members over other dedicated party figures.

However, a thorough fact-check conducted by BOOM, a fact-checking organization, has debunked these claims, revealing them to be completely false. Extensive visual evidence, including live footage and photographs, confirms the presence of Rahul Gandhi and other senior Congress leaders at the funeral proceedings in New Delhi. These visuals documented their participation in paying their final respects to the former Prime Minister, directly contradicting the narrative being propagated online.

The evidence gathered by BOOM included live-streamed footage from NEWS9, clearly showing Rahul Gandhi placing a wreath on Singh’s body at Nigam Bodh Ghat, the cremation site. Further visual documentation captured Mallikarjun Kharge, another prominent Congress leader, paying tribute to Singh. Additionally, footage from ANI News confirmed the presence of Rahul, Priyanka, and Sonia Gandhi at the Congress headquarters in Delhi, where they paid their respects earlier. The Congress party’s official X account also shared photographs showing Rahul Gandhi on the truck carrying Singh’s mortal remains during the funeral procession.

Further solidifying the debunking of the false claims, Rahul Gandhi himself shared photos on his X account, depicting him with Singh’s family at the funeral. Accompanying these images, Gandhi posted a heartfelt message in Hindi, expressing his condolences and highlighting Singh’s humility, guidance, and significant contributions to the country. In a separate post, Gandhi paid tribute to Singh, describing him as a leader of immense wisdom and integrity, whose understanding of economics inspired the nation. He expressed his personal loss of a mentor and guide, emphasizing the admiration and pride with which millions would remember Singh.

This incident underscores the dangers of misinformation spreading rapidly on social media platforms, particularly during emotionally charged events like the passing of a national figure. The false narrative surrounding the Congress leaders’ absence at Singh’s funeral sought to exploit the grief and sentiment surrounding the event to create division and sow distrust. The thorough fact-checking and debunking of these claims highlight the importance of verifying information before sharing it online, especially during sensitive times. The readily available visual evidence and official statements directly contradicted the false claims, demonstrating the need for critical evaluation of information circulating on social media.
