Man City News Today (20 October): Haaland Doubt

Manchester City have barely had time to exhale. The 3-2 win over Ipswich Town on Monday was the kind of gritty, nervy Premier League result that leaves you thrilled at full-time and exhausted an hour later. But football at the highest level does not wait for tired legs or sore ankles. By Tuesday morning, with UEFA Champions League football at the Etihad on the horizon, the focus had already shifted to AEK Athens. The mood around the training ground, according to ESPN’s latest reports, is one of cautious optimism rather than panic. There are bumps and bruises, a significant knee injury to one key forward, and a genuine fitness question over the team’s most important player. Yet manager Enzo Maresca appears relaxed, maybe even relieved, as he assesses a squad that has been asked to navigate a brutal early-season schedule. The evening kick-off against AEK Athens is not just another match; it is a chance to take control of their European group. But it arrives at a moment when City’s medical staff are earning their wages, and when every training session brings another fitness update.

The headline name, of course, is Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker was spotted limping after the Ipswich game, which immediately set alarm bells ringing among supporters and fantasy football managers alike. ESPN reports that Haaland was still in contention to face AEK Athens as of Monday evening, which is more than many had expected. Maresca’s press conference comments were cautiously positive: “He can be available. We have a session now and we’ll see.” That is the classic manager speak of someone who does not want to show his hand, and perhaps genuinely does not know yet. UEFA’s official Matchday 3 team news, though, lists Haaland as doubtful with a foot problem, which is a slightly more worrying sign. The word “doubtful” in UEFA’s system usually means something real, but it also leaves room for a late recovery. The fact that Haaland is still in the mix suggests the knock is not a serious structural issue. It might be a bruised foot, a heavy challenge, or simply the accumulated pain of a striker who gets kicked every week. City will test him in the final training session before the squad is announced. If he starts, great. If he is on the bench, that might mean Maresca is protecting him for the Premier League clash at Aston Villa on Saturday. If he is absent entirely, then the concern level rises. For now, the official line is that he is in the running, and that is good enough for City fans who have learned to trust their manager’s updates.

The more serious piece of news involves Antoine Semenyo. The winger’s knee injury, suffered after he came off the bench in the 76th minute against Ipswich, is not as catastrophic as it first appeared, but it still hurts. Maresca confirmed that Semenyo faces around eight weeks on the sidelines. That is a painful timeframe, though the manager was quick to frame it positively: “After the scan we feel much better because it’s not as bad as we expected. It could be eight weeks, so now the most important thing is for him to recover.” There is a strange silver lining in that sentence. Eight weeks sounds long, but in the world of knee injuries, it could have been six months. Semenyo had scored two goals this season, both in that impressive performance against Sunderland last month, and he was beginning to establish himself as a reliable option in the wide areas. His absence will be felt, especially with so many fixtures crammed into the coming weeks. UEFA’s team news lists him as out with a leg problem, which is a broader description, but the message is the same. City now have to plan for life without him until mid-December. That means Maresca will need to rotate, to trust his fringe players, and perhaps to ask one of his attacking midfielders to play a slightly wider role than they might prefer. It also means Haaland’s fitness becomes even more important, because City cannot afford to lose both of their main forward threats at the same time.

There is some good news on the injury front, though. Matheus Nunes, Mateo Kovacic and Nico O’Reilly all picked up knocks against Ipswich, but Maresca does not fear an absence for any of them. “They are, more or less, all okay,” he said, which is about as reassuring as a manager can sound in the middle of a congested season. This is important because City’s midfield depth is already being tested, and losing three players at once would have been a disaster. Instead, the squad can breathe a little easier. The bigger tactical question is how to replace Semenyo in the short term. ESPN lists the wide options available to Maresca as Iliman Ndiaye, Jeremy Doku, Phil Foden, Rayan Cherki and Allan. That is a wealth of talent, even without Semenyo. Ndiaye has been bright, Doku brings raw directness, Foden offers intelligence and goal threat, Cherki can create something out of nothing, and Allan adds a different kind of energy. The problem is not quality; it is balance. Each of these players brings a slightly different skill set, and Maresca will have to choose the right combination for each opponent. Against AEK Athens, a team likely to sit deep and defend in numbers, he might favour Cherki and Foden for their creativity. Against Aston Villa, who will try to press and counter, he might prefer Doku’s pace and Ndiaye’s work rate. Semenyo’s absence does not weaken City dramatically, but it does reduce their margin for error.

The predicted line-up for tonight, published by UEFA and based on reports rather than an official team sheet, gives a strong hint of Maresca’s thinking. It reads: Donnarumma; Khusanov, Ruben Dias, Guehi, Gvardiol; Bouaddi, Anderson; Cherki, Fernandez, Ndiaye; Haaland. If that is anything close to the real lineup, it suggests a side that is strong enough to control the game, but also one that has been chosen with rotation in mind. Donnarumma in goal, a back four with two new-ish faces, a double pivot of Bouaddi and Anderson, and an attacking quartet behind Haaland. The absence of some regular starters might be a surprise, but it also shows the depth Maresca has built. AEK Athens, meanwhile, will be without goalkeeper Strakosha, who is out with a wrist injury. That is a significant blow for them, because Strakosha is an experienced presence between the posts, but it is not the only concern. UEFA lists no other AEK player as doubtful, and there are no suspensions for either side. That means the visitors will be able to field their strongest available eleven, even if their strongest is still a long shot against City. The Etihad can be an intimidating place on European nights, and with a full crowd behind them, City will fancy their chances of taking all three points.

Looking ahead, the next few weeks are packed. After AEK Athens, City travel to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday 24 October, with a 12:30 kick-off. Then comes a Carabao Cup tie against Brighton at home on Wednesday 28 October. That is the kind of run that tests a squad’s mental and physical resilience. The injury list, as of Tuesday morning, is manageable but not empty. Haaland is doubtful with a foot problem, Semenyo is out for around eight weeks with a knee injury, and Nunes, Kovacic and O’Reilly have all taken knocks but are expected to be available. For fantasy football owners, this is a week of tough decisions. Haaland’s status is flagged at 75% in many FPL injury charts, which is exactly the kind of grey area that causes sleepless nights. Cherki looks like a good option to come in, while Semenyo owners need to find a replacement. But beyond the fantasy game, the real story is resilience. Manchester City are not a team in crisis. They are a team carrying a few bruises, missing one important player, and hoping their biggest star can shake off a sore foot in time for a Champions League evening. That is football. It is messy, uncertain and always moving. By the time the team news drops on Tuesday afternoon, everyone will have a clearer picture. Until then, Maresca will keep his cards close, the medical staff will keep working, and the players will keep preparing. The only thing certain is that the show goes on, and City have no intention of slowing down.
