Kunle Afolayan dismisses ₦5bn Aníkúlápó court case rumours

Renowned Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan recently found himself at the center of a social media storm after viral reports claimed he was entangled in a staggering ₦5 billion debt dispute with FirstBank. The rumors, which gained significant traction on platforms like X, alleged that the acclaimed director had taken out the massive loan to finance his 2022 cinematic masterpiece, Aníkúlápó, but had failed to meet repayment terms after the film’s acquisition by Netflix. As the speculation grew, suggesting that the bank had even initiated legal proceedings against him, the situation threatened to tarnish both his professional reputation and his long-standing relationship with the financial institution.

For a creative force like Afolayan, who prides himself on high-quality production and professional integrity, these allegations were not just bothersome but entirely unfounded. Recognizing the potential for misinformation to spread rapidly in the digital age, he took to social media on Friday to address his fans, family, and industry associates directly. In a candid video, he dismissed the rumors with a mix of firm clarity and self-deprecating humor, aiming to put the hearts of his well-wishers at ease. He emphasized that the narrative was completely fabricated and that he was compelled to speak out, not because the rumors held any weight, but to protect those who genuinely care about the progress of his career.

Setting the record straight regarding his finances, Afolayan quipped about the sheer scale of the alleged loan, noting that while he would never turn down a ₦5 billion facility if it could truly be used to better the country’s creative landscape, the notion was purely fictional. He clarified that Aníkúlápó was a product of a transparent and straightforward co-production arrangement between his company, Golden Effects Pictures, and the global streaming giant, Netflix. He adamantly insisted that the business agreement was clean from the start, stating, “No money is owed to anyone,” and reiterated that the project’s success was built on professional collaboration rather than the controversial debt trap described by the rumor mill.

Beyond the specific allegations regarding the loan, Afolayan went on to clarify the state of his relationship with FirstBank, dispelling any talk of legal friction. He described the institution as a “good friend” and a partner with whom he has enjoyed a long-standing, mutually beneficial history of collaborations. According to the filmmaker, there is no ongoing litigation whatsoever. By framing the relationship with the bank in such positive terms, he effectively dismantled the claims that FirstBank had reached a point of taking him to court, assuring his followers that the two parties were still operating in total harmony and that no disputes existed of any sort.

While the filmmaker remained composed throughout his address, he couldn’t help but acknowledge that the misinformation had origins that he was uncomfortably aware of. With a cryptic nod to those orchestrating the narrative, he referred to them as his “gurus,” hinting at internal or industry-related pressures but ultimately choosing not to name names. By keeping his cards close to his chest and refusing to fuel the gossip with further drama, he demonstrated a level of maturity that distinguished him from his detractors, focusing instead on the truth rather than succumbing to a public squabble with those who clearly wished to see him dragged through the mud.

Ultimately, the video served as a strong closing chapter to a tiresome saga. As he thanked his supporters for their loyalty and for flagging the misleading links, Afolayan’s message was clear: he remains firmly committed to his art and his business. By taking direct control of the narrative, he succeeded in protecting his brand and clarifying that he is neither a debtor to the bank nor a party to any pending legal crisis. The incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly rumors can snowball online, but more importantly, it showcases how a swift, honest, and public correction can effectively neutralize falsehoods before they do permanent damage.
