Jeffrey Donaldson tells jury he is ‘crystal clear’ rape allegation is false

The legal proceedings against former DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson reached a pivotal moment this week at Newry Crown Court, as the 63-year-old took the stand to vehemently deny a series of grave criminal allegations. Appearing in a dark suit and red tie, Donaldson, who once stood as a dominant figure in Northern Irish politics, faced a jury to address 18 charges, including rape, indecent assault, and gross indecency. These accusations, which involve two complainants and span a period between 1985 and 2008, represent a profound fall from grace for a man who rose to prominence with the Good Friday Agreement. Throughout his testimony, his tone remained firm and categorical, insisting that the harrowing accounts provided by his accusers are entirely fabricated.

At the heart of the defense’s strategy was the attempt to dismantle the credibility of the prosecution’s narrative. When questioned by his barrister, Kieran Vaughan KC, about specific allegations of sexual abuse—most notably a claim of rape from one of the complainants—Donaldson was unwavering. He described the allegations as “simply not true” and asserted that the events described by the women simply never occurred. He framed the accusations as impossible, using phrases such as “crystal clear” and “just unbelievable” to articulate his position. For a man who spent decades in the public eye, navigating the complexities of high-stakes political negotiation, this appearance was a stark departure from the parliamentary floor, placing him in a fragile position where his personal reputation hangs in the balance.

The trial also delved into the complexities of human relationships and the lingering trauma of the past. A significant point of contention has been a letter written by Donaldson in 2020 which expressed “regret” for “hurt, pain, and distress” caused. While prosecutors have suggested this letter might be an implicit admission of his misconduct, Donaldson offered a different perspective entirely. He insisted that the letter was unrelated to any claims of abuse, maintaining that its contents were about an entirely different, private matter. By separating his past expressions of general regret from the specific criminal charges, he attempted to draw a clear line between his acknowledged personal shortcomings—including a documented 2008 affair—and the heinous acts he is currently accused of committing.

A particularly emotional aspect of the testimony involved his wife, Eleanor Donaldson, who is herself facing trial on charges of aiding and abetting. Eleanor is currently exempt from the main proceedings on mental health grounds, but her husband used his time on the stand to defend her character and their domestic dynamic. When faced with claims that she had witnessed his alleged abuse and failed to intervene, Donaldson was resolute. He told the court that his wife would never have tolerated such behavior and would have been “very angry” had she witnessed anything remotely inappropriate. He portrayed these accusations as nonsensical, arguing that the alleged events simply would not have aligned with the realities of their marriage.

The testimony also offered a glimpse into the chaotic morning in 2024 when the couple was arrested, providing a humanizing look at the suddenness of such a public collapse. Describing how police arrived at their home at six in the morning, Donaldson recalled the experience as a “complete shock” that left his head “in a spin.” He described the arrest as a blur of legal jargon, emphasizing that he had no inkling that these allegations were pending. In a moment of vulnerability, he admitted that the legal battle has consumed his thoughts entirely, noting that he struggles with the weight of the charges during “every waking moment.” It was a rare insight into the psychological toll the trial has taken, contrasting with his otherwise composed attempts to rebut the details laid out by the prosecution.

As the trial moves into its next phase, the spotlight shifts to the prosecution’s cross-examination, led by Rosemary Walsh KC. The coming days will be critical, as the court forces Donaldson to reconcile his narrative with the testimony previously given by the complainants. The trial is now more than just a legal assessment of 18 charges; it is a collision of two vastly different accounts of history. As the proceedings move forward, the jury is tasked with piercing through the denials and the defense of character to determine the truth behind these long-standing, deeply painful allegations. With his political career dismantled and his private life laid bare, Donaldson remains in the witness box, facing the most consequential interrogation of his life.
