Family of Twin Falls shooting victim speaks out against misinformation online

The quiet community of Twin Falls, Idaho, was shattered this past Saturday when a horrific mass shooting unfolded at a local In-N-Out Burger. Among those caught in the chaos was Terry Dudley, a well-known figure who manages North Star Taxi. Terry was at the restaurant’s Tesla charging station when the gunfire erupted, leaving him with life-threatening injuries. His son, Micheal Dudley, describes the agonizing hours that followed, marked by a frantic rush to the hospital and the terrifying uncertainty of his father’s condition. Terry, who sustained a gunshot wound to the back that caused internal fragmentation and a collapsed lung, has since been life-flighted to Boise for specialized care, where his family remains by his side, cautiously optimistic about his recovery.

To understand the kind of man Terry is, one must look past his own modest description of himself. While Terry often claims he isn’t “social,” those who know him describe a man deeply woven into the fabric of Twin Falls. To his son and friends, he is a familiar face to everyone, a man who consistently built connections throughout the community. This deep-rooted presence made the events of Saturday feel all the more personal for the town. When the shooting began, Terry’s first instinct was to call for help, demonstrating a presence of mind that defined his character even in his darkest moment. Unable to reach 911, he contacted his close friend and co-worker, James Palmer, who then alerted his girlfriend, Lindsay Tanguy.

Lindsay, who had only moments earlier been across the bridge at Devil’s Corral, arrived at the chaotic scene to find a community in shock. The parking lot was a harrowing tableau of emergency responders and victims. As she navigated toward the Tesla station, she witnessed the profound trauma affecting others, including a couple in a nearby gray Tesla who had also been targeted. In a desperate bid to help, Lindsay and others improvised, using a car mat to support Terry on the sweltering pavement after he lost consciousness. The scene was described as complete chaos, with blocked access for ambulances and the heavy, suffocating weight of an event that would change the lives of many Twin Falls residents forever.

Beyond the physical trauma, the Dudley family has been forced to battle an insidious secondary wave of pain: the digital wildfire of misinformation. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, social media platforms became saturated with rumors and inaccurate reporting. Most cruelly, a fabricated obituary for Terry circulated online while he was still fighting for his life in a hospital bed. Micheal described the experience of fielding endless calls and messages based on these falsehoods as “insane,” noting that the cruelty of online rumors added an unnecessary, heavy burden to a family already reeling from the shock of the violence.

Lindsay echoed this frustration, noting that the speed at which social media twisted the facts caused immense distress for those trying to focus on the reality of the crisis. She urged the public to exercise patience and restraint, reminding onlookers that behind every headline and viral post is a human being with a family that is currently living through a nightmare. For the victims, the focus must remain on healing and investigation rather than managing the fallout from reckless online speculation. The family has emphasized that accurate information will come to light in due time, and until then, silence and support are far more valuable than conjecture.

Despite the darkness, the resilience of the Twin Falls community has begun to shine through, providing a necessary glimmer of hope for the Dudley family. Micheal expressed sincere gratitude for the outpouring of love and offers of support from neighbors and strangers alike. As the family shifts their focus toward the long road of recovery ahead, friends have stepped in to help organize relief efforts, including a GoFundMe page and plans for future community fundraisers. While the scars from Saturday will undoubtedly linger, the strength of the community’s response serves as a poignant reminder that while one individual’s actions can bring terror, the collective kindness of a town can provide the foundation for rebuilding.
