‘False Claims Cannot Alter Reality’: India Dismisses China’s Attempt To Rename Places In Arunachal Pradesh

In a move that has stirred diplomatic waters, India has firmly rejected China’s recent attempts to unilaterally rename geographical locations, particularly those along disputed borders. This comes amidst reports that China is creating a new administrative county, “Cenling,” in its Xinjiang province, strategically located near Afghanistan, India’s Arunachal Pradesh, and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Speaking for the Indian External Affairs Ministry, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal plainly stated that India “categorically rejects any mischievous attempts by the Chinese side to assign fictitious names to places which form part of the territory of India.” This isn’t just about names; it’s about sovereignty. Jaiswal emphasized that simply renaming a place doesn’t change who truly owns it. He asserted, with unwavering conviction, that “such attempts by China at introducing false claims and manufacturing baseless narratives cannot alter the undeniable reality that these places and territories, including Arunachal Pradesh, were, are, and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India.” It’s a clear message: these lands are India’s, and no amount of cartographic maneuvering can change that fundamental truth.

Jaiswal went on to highlight the broader implications of Beijing’s actions, warning that such unilateral moves could seriously derail the painstaking progress made in diplomatic channels. “These actions by the Chinese side detract from ongoing efforts to stabilise and normalise India-China bilateral ties,” he cautioned, adding that “China should refrain from actions that inject negativity into relations and undermine efforts to create a better understanding.” This isn’t just some bureaucratic spat; it’s a significant setback for the delicate dance of diplomacy between two of the world’s most populous nations. The Indian government is essentially saying, “We’re trying to build bridges here, and you’re adding gasoline to the fire.” This diplomatic pushback is particularly resonant given the persistent territorial friction in Ladakh, a region that has seen its fair share of border skirmishes. The creation of “Cenling” county, officially sanctioned by the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region government on March 26 and set to fall under the jurisdiction of the “Kashgar prefecture,” as reported by the South China Morning Post, is seen as yet another provocative step, especially given its location near both Afghanistan and PoK within the formidable Karakoram mountain range.

This isn’t an isolated incident either. This newest county marks the third time in just over a year that China has carved out a new administrative unit within Xinjiang. India has previously registered strong objections with Beijing regarding the formation of “Hean” and “Hekang” counties. New Delhi’s consistent argument has been that significant portions of the land designated under Chinese jurisdiction for these new counties legally belong to the Indian Union Territory of Ladakh. Specifically, the “Hean county” encompasses a large section of the “Aksai Chin” plateau. While this territory has been under Chinese administration since the 1962 conflict, India steadfastly views it as an integral part of Ladakh, making it a constant and deeply entrenched source of bilateral discord. Every time China redraws these administrative lines, it’s like a fresh wound for India, a reminder of unresolved historical grievances and ongoing territorial disputes that continue to strain relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

The administrative hub for this new county, “Kashgar,” itself holds immense historical and geopolitical significance. It’s a prominent historical site along the ancient “Silk Road” and plays a vital role as a link between China, South Asia, and Central Asia. More importantly, it serves as the origin point for the controversial “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor” (CPEC). This multi-billion-dollar infrastructure project, a flagship of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, traverses through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, a move that India has repeatedly and vehemently protested as a blatant violation of its sovereignty. Essentially, India sees China using its disputed territory for a massive infrastructure project, further cementing claims that India contests.

Even though the precise “administrative divisions and boundaries” of Cenling are still somewhat shrouded in secrecy, the very fact that this new unit is located in such a sensitive and strategically crucial region sends ripples of concern throughout the international community, and especially in India. It underscores the intense vigilance with which China’s ongoing administrative restructuring along international borders is being watched. It’s not just about lines on a map; it’s about power, influence, and the redefinition of geopolitical realities. Every new county, every new name, is perceived as a deliberate calculus in China’s continuous effort to assert its territorial claims and expand its control, prompting India to stand firm and loudly declare that some realities, like its sovereignty, simply cannot be renamed away.
