False alarm on Warsaw–Tel Aviv flight triggers fighter jets

It is the kind of mid-air drama that belongs in a high-stakes thriller, yet it unfolded in the very real, very tense skies over Eastern Europe. An ordinary flight—LOT Polish Airlines flight LO155, operated by Electra Airways—suddenly found itself at the center of a major international security scramble. What began as a standard trip turned into a nerve-wracking ordeal when the Airbus A320 began transmitting an emergency “hijacking” signal. For the passengers on board, the flight was likely routine until the sudden realization that the world’s most advanced fighter jets were closing in on them, reacting to a digital cry for help that no one in the cabin had actually authorized.

The response from the regional military powers was swift and uncompromising. As soon as the alert signal hit the monitors of air traffic controllers, the NATO air policing mission in Bulgaria went into high gear. A MiG-29 fighter was launched with orders to intercept the passenger jet as soon as it crossed the Danube River. This wasn’t merely a precautionary measure; it was a demonstration of how quickly the modern world responds to potential threats in the air. As the aircraft moved through the airspace, Türkiye also stepped in, scrambling two of its own F-16 fighters to escort the plane, creating a high-pressure corridor that forced the Airbus to navigate an increasingly crowded and watchful environment.

The confusion only deepened as the flight progressed. According to reports from broadcaster BNT, the alarming transponder code—a signal that immediately alerts authorities to a security breach—was triggered not once, but twice. It appeared first just before the plane entered Bulgarian airspace, and then again after it had cleared Turkish airspace. The flight plan became erratic, with the aircraft even turning back near Cyprus before finally diverting toward Burgas, Bulgaria. Israeli media outlets later noted that their own fighter jets had been scrambled to monitor the situation, highlighting a rare, multinational military reaction sparked by what was, ultimately, a series of invisible, erroneous inputs.

Once the flight landed in Burgas, the scene on the tarmac was tense. A formal crisis-response alert was declared, and the aircraft was promptly isolated and moved away from the airport’s critical infrastructure. Emergency crews and security teams swarmed the plane to carry out standard, rigorous safety checks. For the passengers and crew, who were likely bewildered by the sudden militarization of their journey, the relief was palpable when officials confirmed that everyone on board was physically unharmed. The drama, however, left behind a trail of unanswered questions about how such a massive security apparatus could be activated by what turned out to be a mere technical or human slip.

The explanation provided by LOT Polish Airlines, through their spokesman Krzysztof Moczulski, shifted the narrative from a genuine hijacking attempt to the human element of aviation technology. Moczulski revealed that the entire ordeal stemmed from an incorrectly configured transponder that broadcast a threat code to ground stations. He firmly clarified that the alarm was entirely false, noting that the pilot had confirmed as much to air traffic control. While he labeled it a likely case of “human error,” he emphasized that such a mistake is an “absolutely exceptional occurrence” that almost never happens, underscoring just how rare it is for a cockpit input to trigger an international military response.

Looking back, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between modern security protocols and the fallibility of those operating the controls. While the authorities are treating the event as a serious matter for investigation, it stands as a testament to the vigilance of NATO’s air defense systems. The fact that dozens of military aircraft were mobilized to intercept a single commercial flight shows that, in the skies over Europe, there is no room for complacency. For the aviation industry, the ordeal of flight LO155 will likely be distilled into a case study on training and equipment safety, but for those involved, it remains a jarring example of how easily a small, mundane error can spiral into a global emergency.
