Crown drops charge that alleged false confession in Saskatoon homicide

Life takes unexpected turns, sometimes throwing us into situations we never imagined. For Avyn Ahenakew, an 18-year-old in Saskatoon, a series of events in early February led him down a path of false accusations, jail time, and ultimately, a glimmer of hope as the Crown stayed charges against him. This isn’t just a legal case; it’s a human story about the vulnerability of individuals within the justice system, the pressure cooker of police investigations, and the long road to clearing one’s name.

The story begins on a somber note when, on February 3rd, two 25-year-old men were rushed to St. Paul’s Hospital with stab wounds. One of them, Kiefer Kitchemonia-Strongquill, tragically succumbed to his injuries, while the other man survived. The community was left grappling with the senseless violence, and the police began their urgent search for answers. In the days that followed, Avyn Ahenakew found himself at the center of the investigation. He was initially charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault, accused of being responsible for the tragic stabbings. Imagine the shock, the fear, and the disorientation of an 18-year-old suddenly facing such grave accusations. His world, as he knew it, crumbled around him.

However, the plot thickened. A few weeks later, in early March, the police made a new arrest. This time, a different man, Albert George Sanderson Scott, was charged with the stabbings. With this development, the initial charges against Avyn for manslaughter and aggravated assault were dropped. It must have been a moment of immense relief, a brief respite from the nightmare. But the relief was short-lived. The police then laid a new charge against Avyn, alleging he had obstructed justice on February 7th “by providing a false confession and false statements during a homicide investigation.” He was also charged with being an accessory after the fact to manslaughter and aggravated assault. It’s a complex situation to wrap one’s head around: first, suspected of the crime, then cleared, only to be charged with an entirely new set of offenses relating to how he interacted with the investigation. This turn of events highlights the intricate dance between suspects, police, and the pursuit of truth, sometimes revealing missteps or misunderstandings that can have profound consequences.

For Avyn Ahenakew, the past few months have been a blur of legal proceedings, uncertainty, and the harsh realities of incarceration. Since his arrest in early February, he has been held in custody. His defense lawyer, Meagan Ward, describes this period as a “considerable” time in jail that had a “significant impact” on him. Beyond the general difficulty of confinement, Ward shared in court that the charges that were ultimately stayed “contributed to a very difficult time.” This included periods of isolation, which can be particularly mentally taxing, and “situations” with other inmates that put his safety at risk. Prison is a challenging environment for anyone, let alone a young man going through the emotional turmoil of being accused and then re-accused in a complex homicide case. This humanizes the legal process, reminding us that behind every charge and every legal maneuver are individuals facing immense personal struggles and navigating a system that can be both bewildering and unforgiving.

Friday brought a crucial turn in Avyn’s journey. In Saskatoon provincial court, the Crown made the decision to stay all of the charges against him that were related to the homicide. Meagan Ward, his lawyer, expressed her satisfaction with the outcome, calling it the “right outcome for what she called ‘questionable charges.'” She further elaborated in an interview, stating that “Ultimately, the circumstances around that were a little bit concerning.” Ward emphasized that Avyn never had the intention to mislead police, suggesting that the alleged false confession emerged “after a series of conversations” with police. This statement hints at the complex psychology of police interrogations, where individuals, especially young and vulnerable ones, can feel pressured or confused, leading to statements that might not accurately reflect the truth. Crown prosecutor David Piche, while not elaborating on the specifics of the allegations or his reasons for staying the charges, indicated that given the ongoing nature of the manslaughter case against Albert George Sanderson Scott, further comment was not appropriate. This professional silence, while understandable from a legal perspective, leaves many questions unanswered about how and why the initial allegations against Avyn came to be.

On that same Friday, Avyn Ahenakew also confronted some unrelated, prior charges of mischief and assault. He pleaded guilty to these offenses and was sentenced to time served, finally securing his release. This moment of freedom, after months of being held in custody under the shadow of far more serious accusations, must have been an overwhelming mix of relief and exhaustion. As Avyn walks away, his journey underscores the importance of legal representation, the meticulous work of defense lawyers like Meagan Ward who advocate tirelessly for their clients, and the careful consideration required by the Crown in determining the validity and strength of charges. Meanwhile, Albert George Sanderson Scott, the man currently charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault, appeared in court on the same day and was remanded in custody until May 21st, reminding us that the search for justice in Kiefer Kitchemonia-Strongquill’s death continues, even as Avyn Ahenakew begins to rebuild his life after a harrowing experience within the Canadian justice system. His story serves as a poignant reminder that the pursuit of truth is not always linear, and the human cost of legal complexities can be profound.
