Cork racing tipster apologises for false claim that businessman threatened to kill him

The cutthroat world of horse racing tips, where reputations are currency and accusations can cripple, recently saw a dramatic High Court showdown brought to a surprisingly swift close. At its heart was a dispute between two Cork-based tipsters: Robert Heneghan, a seasoned professional leading Pro Sports Advice Ltd, and Gearóid Norris, a newer figure on the scene. Their rivalry, played out across the digital landscape, escalated from online jabs to serious legal action, culminating in Mr. Norris issuing a public apology for spreading false and damaging claims, particularly a shocking allegation of a death threat. This whole affair serves as a stark reminder of the power and peril of online communication, especially when personal and professional reputations are at stake.

The story began to unravel when Robert Heneghan initiated legal proceedings against Gearóid Norris for a series of defamatory publications. Since March 2023, Norris had been actively posting unflattering and untrue material about Heneghan across various social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), Substack, and TikTok. For Heneghan, these weren’t just petty squabbles; they were attacks on his livelihood and credibility, essential assets in the competitive horse racing tips industry. He needed to protect his name and the integrity of his business, Pro Sports Advice Ltd, from the corrosive effects of Norris’s relentless online campaign. The constant barrage of negativity, ranging from veiled insults to outright falsehoods, undeniably took a toll on Heneghan and his company, making legal action a regrettable but necessary step. The digital nature of the attacks meant they spread rapidly and widely, making containment and retraction a complex and urgent challenge.

The conflict reached a boiling point when Gearóid Norris published a particularly egregious article on Substack. In this piece, Norris made an astounding claim: that Robert Heneghan had telephoned him and brutally threatened to kill him by shooting him in the head, and furthermore, had allegedly threatened his family. Norris even asserted that he possessed a recording of this terrifying 53-second phone call. This was no longer just about professional reputation; it was a grave accusation that painted Heneghan as a violent and dangerous individual. For Heneghan, this claim was not only completely false but also a transparent attempt to manipulate the ongoing legal battle. He firmly believed Norris was trying to “pressurize me to relent on my decision to institute legal proceedings against him for all the defamatory material he had previously posted online about me.” The sheer audacity of the false claim, coupled with the fabrication of a recording, indicated a desperate attempt by Norris to turn the tables and derail the legal process.

The High Court swiftly intervened, taking the serious nature of the allegations to heart. Last month, Heneghan, through his legal counsel, successfully sought immediate injunction proceedings to have the inflammatory Substack article removed. The court not only ordered the article’s immediate deletion but also demanded that Mr. Norris furnish the alleged phone call recording as proof of his claims. This was a crucial turning point. When asked to provide the evidence, Mr. Norris’s solicitor delivered a significant admission to the court: there was no such recording. This revelation completely undermined Norris’s central accusation and exposed the falsehood of his entire narrative. It was a moment of truth that severely damaged Norris’s credibility and strengthened Heneghan’s position in the legal proceedings. The absence of the recording confirmed Heneghan’s assertion that the call never happened, reinforcing the malicious intent behind Norris’s online publications.

When the case returned to court on Friday, the swift resolution was a direct consequence of Norris’s inability to substantiate his claims. Tom Murphy BL, representing Robert Heneghan, announced that the proceedings had been resolved. As part of this resolution, Gearóid Norris had provided written undertakings to the court. These were significant commitments: he promised not to publish any further material directly or indirectly referring to Mr. Heneghan, not to repeat any of the previously published defamatory content, and to remove any remaining offensive material from all online platforms. This comprehensive agreement aimed to entirely cleanse the digital space of Norris’s harmful publications. The undertakings served as both a victory for Heneghan and a strong deterrent against future similar actions from Norris, demonstrating the court’s commitment to protecting individuals from online defamation.

The culmination of the proceedings saw Brendan O’Sullivan BL, representing Gearóid Norris, read out a formal apology in court. In a poignant moment, Norris unequivocally stated that the Substack article, in which he claimed to have received the alleged 53-second phone call with death threats, was “not true.” He further confirmed that Mr. Heneghan did not make any such threat and consequently wished to apologize to him. Mr. Justice Brian Cregan officially noted the undertakings and struck out the proceedings, bringing an end to the contentious legal battle. This apology, delivered publicly and formally in court, served as a crucial step towards rectifying the damage done to Robert Heneghan’s reputation. It also carried a significant weight, underscoring the serious repercussions of propagating false information online and ultimately restoring a measure of peace and justice in this bitter online feud.
