Contractor held for filing false robbery report  | Daily Express Malaysia

The quiet town of Beaufort was recently stirred by a bizarre case of deception that highlights the desperate lengths to which people will go when trapped by financial mismanagement. A 57-year-old local contractor, a man who presumably spent his career building structures, found himself trying to construct a false reality to safeguard his personal reputation. After walking into the Beaufort District Police Headquarters, he filed a report claiming he had been the victim of a brutal assault and robbery in the rural area of Kampung Lumatai. He told authorities that on a Sunday night, while parked at a local stall, he was struck from behind with a wooden object, knocked unconscious, and stripped of his belongings—including RM3,000 in cash and two mobile phones.

When a citizen reports a violent crime, law enforcement agencies are duty-bound to dedicate significant time and resources to finding the perpetrator. The police took the man’s claims seriously, initiating an investigation into what appeared to be a random act of street violence. However, as detectives began to piece together the timeline and physical evidence of the alleged attack, inconsistencies started to emerge. In the world of police work, things rarely stay buried for long; the more the officers dug into the specifics of the man’s story, the less sense the narrative made, eventually leading them to suspect that the victim was, in fact, the architect of his own misfortune.

The truth behind the contractor’s elaborate ruse was far more mundane—and significantly more embarrassing—than a violent mugging. Investigations revealed that the man had fallen victim to an online loan scam, a predatory trap that has ensnared many unsuspecting individuals. Fearing the fallout of his financial mistake and desperate to keep the truth from his wife and family, the man concocted the story of the robbery to explain away the loss of his money and his communication devices. He essentially “staged” a tragedy to cover up a moment of poor judgment, hoping that by portraying himself as a victim of a crime, he could sidestep the shame of having been scammed.

As pressure from the investigators mounted, the man’s resolve crumbled. Under questioning, he eventually confessed that the entire encounter in Kampung Lumatai was a work of fiction. There was no wooden object, there was no assault, and there certainly was no mysterious assailant lurking in the dark. The realization that he had wasted valuable police time was almost as significant as the realization of his original loss. By filing a false police report, he had transitioned from a victim of a digital scam to a perpetrator of a legal offense, trading a personal embarrassment for a potential criminal record.

The aftermath of this deception has been swift and unforgiving. Because the man’s actions hindered the police and diverted resources away from actual crimes, the investigating officer filed a formal criminal complaint against him. He is now being investigated under Section 182 of the Penal Code, which specifically covers the giving of false information to public servants. This is a sobering reminder that the law does not take lightly to those who treat the police station as a place to script plays to cover up personal failings. The gravity of the law is designed for genuine protection, and abusing that system carries consequences that far exceed the sting of a financial scam.

Ultimately, the police team managed to recover the items the man had hidden behind a shop lot, closing the book on an episode that serves as a cautionary tale for the community. The contractor’s attempt to preserve his dignity by weaving a web of lies only served to deepen his predicament. While he may have been trying to protect himself from the judgment of his loved ones, his choice to lie to the authorities turned a private financial tragedy into public legal jeopardy. Beaufort remains a safe place, but this incident underscores that honesty—no matter how painful—is always the best path, as the truth has a persistent way of finding the light.
