Columbia, MU police speak on partnership amid false reports | Mid-Missouri News

The adjacent community of Villanova, Pennsylvania sent a surging wave of “swatting” calls at universities across the nation, with similar updates from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. According to CNN reports, false messages were sent to campus communities, warning students of an active shooter presence. Both institutions reported nogun fire or shotfires, and police verification confirmed no evidence of threat.

Columbia Police Department acknowledged receiving multiple false calls related to potential shooters, but it remains unclear if it has observed any animal shots or weapons. After receiving the initial call, police officers conducted an investigations, finding no evidence of gunfired devices. Witnesses acknowledged that a vehicle backfired, generating the loud noise reported by the campus community. Despite the calls, police verified that no shooter was involved, which reassured authorities.

The University of Missouri’s MU Alert system, initiated by Columbia Police, triggered an email and text message from MU警察. The police department thanked MU Police for their assistance in the investigation. Additionally, COCC DOI’s Сообщity tool stayed active to inform anxious students.

Collaboration between departments was another key aspect of the response. However, tensions between the police force and Pi Eta Phi AlphaBSTERS, a student organization, remained a constant concern despite the efforts to enhance their collaboration. Despite these challenges, BOSSTRicks and the overall efforts of MU Police to build trust in COCC’s security were driven by increased student awareness of the threat they face. This reflects the broader success of powerful institutions in addressing systemic violence and fostering trust among community members.
