CNN Did Not Cover This Story About Elon Musk and the Statue of Liberty: It’s a Hoax.

In a bizarre twist on social media, claims surfaced that Elon Musk is considering melting down the Statue of Liberty to produce limited edition Cybertrucks for Tesla. A screenshot alleging this statement was posted on Threads on December 1 and presented as a headline from CNN dated November 25. The shocking assertion quickly attracted attention and sparked outrage among online users. However, investigation reveals that this claim is utterly fabricated, highlighting the prevalence of misinformation in today’s digital media landscape.

As part of efforts to tackle false news, Meta, the parent company of Threads, flagged the post for misleading content. A comprehensive search was conducted across various reliable channels, including CNN’s official website and other prominent news databases, but no evidence confirmed that CNN ever published such a headline or story. This incident raises pertinent questions regarding the reliability of information shared on social media platforms and the potential harm caused when false narratives gain traction.

Further scrutiny of the screenshot revealed that it first appeared on Reddit with a satirical label, indicating its humorous, non-factual nature. Despite the clearly satirical origin, the Threads post lacked any disclaimer, thereby misleading users into believing it was a real news article. CNN’s spokesperson, Emily Kuhn, firmly denied that the network reported or published the story. She labeled the associated image of the Statue of Liberty as “clearly fabricated,” underlining its discrepancies compared to the statue’s actual appearance.

Additional signs pointing to the falsity of the screenshot emerged, including inconsistencies in the font used for the headline, which did not resemble that of CNN’s official articles. Moreover, it borrowed details from a genuine article about Musk considering purchasing MSNBC, which made no reference whatsoever to the Statue of Liberty or Tesla vehicles. This manipulation of credible sources underscores the persistent issue of misinformation, particularly related to high-profile figures like Musk.

Elon Musk’s recent efforts to release the Cybertruck have been met with mixed reactions, including new recalls on various parts. Despite his proclivity for making bold statements, particularly through his social media platform X, a review of his posts revealed no discussions related to melting the Statue of Liberty. This fact further emphasizes the fabricated nature of the claim surrounding the monument’s potential destruction for car parts.

In conclusion, the viral spread of the headline regarding Elon Musk and the Statue of Liberty serves as a critical reminder of the need for skepticism in consuming social media content. As misinformation continues to proliferate online, individuals must exercise caution and verify claims through credible sources before sharing or reacting. The incident also underscores the responsibility of social media platforms to effectively label satirical content and combat the dissemination of false information.
