California Rep Eric Swalwell denies former staffer sexual misconduct allegations

This news story centers around accusations of sexual assault leveled against U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell, a prominent figure in California’s Democratic Party and a leading candidate for governor. These are incredibly serious claims, and they’ve understandably sent shockwaves through the political landscape.

Essentially, a former female staffer has come forward with deeply disturbing allegations. She claims that Swalwell sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions while she was intoxicated. Beyond that, she alleges that he pressured her for nude photos, sent her explicit pictures of himself, and even exposed himself in a car, requesting oral sex. The staffer, who was reportedly 21 when she started working for Swalwell, says she would sometimes black out from drinking and wake up naked in his hotel bed, with signs of intercourse, only for him to distance himself afterward. These accusations are not just about one incident, but a pattern of alleged behavior that she says continued even after she left his employment.

Swalwell has vehemently denied all of these accusations in a video statement, calling them “flat out false” and “absolutely false.” He stated that these events “did not happen. They have never happened. And I will fight them with everything that I have.” While he acknowledged past “mistakes in judgment,” he attributed them to his personal life and apologized to his wife for the difficult position she’s in. He also extended an apology to his supporters, though he quickly followed it by asserting that they “know who I am,” highlighting his long career as a public servant, including working as a prosecutor on behalf of sexual assault victims.

The fallout has been immediate and significant. Several of Swalwell’s top Democratic supporters have already withdrawn their endorsements for his gubernatorial bid, with some even calling for him to drop out of the race entirely. This illustrates the highly damaging nature of these allegations, regardless of their veracity, and the profound impact they are having on his political career. As of the time of the report, Swalwell was still a candidate, but his campaign is undoubtedly facing immense pressure and scrutiny.
