Amid outrage, Shilpa Shinde on false harassment complaint against producer: ‘I never allowed police to arrest him’

Imagine being caught in a swirling storm, a tempest of public opinion and legal battles, all while trying to navigate your career and your own conscience. That’s a little like what Shilpa, a popular actress, experienced. She found herself at the heart of a public drama, and now, she’s bravely stepping forward to share her truth, not to stir up more controversy, but to finally set the record straight and, in her words, ‘humanize’ her past actions.

The whole saga began years ago, stemming from her departure from a beloved TV show, “Bhabhi Ji Ghar Par Hain!” Back then, she made serious allegations against her producer, Sanjay Kohli, including sexual harassment. But here’s the startling twist: Shilpa is now admitting that a crucial part of that accusation was untrue. She confessed this on Bharti Singh’s podcast, a moment that resonated deeply with those who had followed her journey closely. “When Bharti Singh’s podcast was released, many people who truly know me and supported me during my Bigg Boss journey understood what I was trying to say,” she explained. It wasn’t an impulsive revelation; she’d even hinted at it during her time on Bigg Boss. The crucial detail, the one that now weighs on her conscience, is that she never intended for the police to arrest him, precisely because she knew she was “lying.” Her initial motivation, she clarifies, wasn’t solely about money, a common assumption in such disputes. This admission isn’t just a bombshell; it’s a window into the desperate measures someone might take when feeling trapped and out of options. She emphasizes that people shouldn’t jump to conclusions without understanding the full, complex reality of her situation back then.

Her decision to speak out now isn’t met with universal applause, and Shilpa is acutely aware of the criticism. She feels that some individuals within the entertainment industry are using her confession as an opportunity to grab headlines, a phenomenon she labels as “bad PR tactics.” It’s a harsh reality of the spotlight, where genuine human struggles can be reduced to fodder for others’ publicity. “Everyone wants publicity,” she notes, a hint of cynicism in her voice, born from experience. She also observes a disheartening trend where some of the most scathing criticism comes from other women. It’s a painful realization, echoing the age-old saying, “People say a woman is another woman’s biggest enemy.” Shilpa describes an “extremely difficult phase” in her life, a period marked by professional setbacks, legal notices, and declining health. She believes that her enduring relevance today is a direct consequence of enduring and surviving that storm. Many people, she argues, saw her vulnerability as an “opportunity” to further their own agendas, highlighting the cutthroat nature of the industry and the often-unspoken struggles that celebrities face behind the polished facade. Crucially, she reveals that the complaint against Sanjay Kohli was withdrawn years ago, and he was never actually arrested, a fact that largely went unnoticed amidst the whirlwind of earlier headlines. “I did what I had to do to free myself from that situation,” she states, implying a desperate need to escape
a suffocating predicament, even if it meant resorting to unconventional means.

The aftermath of her initial departure from “Bhabhi Ji Ghar Par Hain!” was brutal. “People called me psycho,” she recalls, the memory still stinging. Rumors, criminal defamation cases, and even actions from CINTAA (Cine & TV Artistes’ Association) plagued her. The decision to leave the show wasn’t just a career move; it was a precipice. The battles continued, with attempts to prevent her from participating in Bigg Boss, further isolating her and making her feel like an outcast. Her confession now, she explains, is about lifting a heavy burden she’s carried for years. “I finally confessed because I did not want to carry this lie with me forever,” she asserts. It’s a profoundly personal decision, a quest for emotional liberation, a desire to live honestly and authentically after years of living with a secret. The act of publicly acknowledging the truth, while undoubtedly difficult, was her way of finally moving on from a chapter that had defined and confined her for far too long. It’s an act of self-preservation and a profound testament to the human need for honesty, even if that honesty reveals a past mistake.

Perhaps the most surprising turn in this unfolding narrative is the interaction that followed her recent confession. Shilpa claims that Sanjay Kohli and his wife reached out to her directly. “I spoke to them. They told me to let people say whatever they want. They called me to thank me,” she recounts, a hint of vindication in her voice. This phone call, from the very people she had publicly accused, served as a powerful affirmation for Shilpa. It reinforced her belief that she had indeed done the right thing by speaking openly. “I told them that we both know the reality, and I am not afraid of telling the truth,” she states, a clear declaration of her renewed courage and conviction. Her desire isn’t just to clear her own name, but to set an example for others. “I simply wanted to set an example that nobody should be scared of speaking the truth,” she emphasizes. She laments that many people, trapped in similar situations, hold back from speaking their truth due to fear of the backlash and the negative consequences that often follow. Her story, in a way, is a beacon for those who feel silenced, a testament to the power of one’s own voice.

Looking back at her initial allegations in 2016, Shilpa had accused the producers not only of harassment but also of withholding payments. The recent podcast interview provided the platform for her dramatic reversal. “Poor man,” she reflected on Kohli, “he ended up getting defamed because of it. Today, through this platform, I want to say that it was false. I am confessing this for the first time.” This admission, she explains, ultimately led to a settlement and the clearance of her long-overdue payments. “I can’t explain what I was going through at that time,” she told Bharti Singh, highlighting the immense pressure and emotional turmoil she faced. She felt she had “no other option” but to fight, even if it meant resorting to what she now considers a lie. “What I am saying today is a very big thing. Lying is not easy. A lie is a lie, whether it is small or big,” she acknowledged, the weight of her past actions evident in her words. She had always carried the intention, she reveals, that if life ever presented the opportunity, she would confess the truth. Interestingly, in 2025 (a future reference that implies a successful resolution), Shilpa did return to “Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain!”, attributing her comeback to the show’s writer and an improved relationship with the makers – a beautiful full circle that underscores the complex, evolving nature of human relationships and professional reconciliations. Her journey is a potent reminder that life is rarely black and white, and that sometimes, the path to healing and redemption involves confronting uncomfortable truths, both for oneself and for the public narrative.
