The Impact of Conversations with AI on False Beliefs

Communications with artificial intelligence, particularly anonymous online chatbots like ChatGPT, have increasingly been transforming how individuals perceive and believe in issues ranging from nuclear safety to political affairs. A study involving 29 percent of participants revealed that such conversations can lead to a significant shift in false beliefs. Specifically, discussions with ChatGPT have resulted in a reduction of certainty about certain beliefs, especially those participants had already been extremely certain about. This indicates that AI can be a powerful tool for modifying deeply held beliefs and misinformation beliefs.

The Study’s Methodology and Results

The study focused on 1730 participants from the University of Toronto, examining how conversations with ChatGPT could alter their certainty about various beliefs, including conspiracy theories,Tar faction issues, and predictive models of geopolitical events. The researchers categorized the strongest beliefs into ten common false beliefs, identified by participants’ confidence scores on a scale from 0 to 10. Those with higher initial belief scores, on average, experienced a larger reduction in their confidence in false beliefs (1.17 steps) compared to those with lower initial scores (0.19 steps). Applying the Findings to Real-World Scenarios

The findings align with previous studies that have explored the role of artificial intelligence in belief change. For instance, a 2022 study using GPT-4 Turbo revealed similar patterns, with participants’ belief in conspiracy theories decreasing by 20 percent after meaningful interactions with AI. However, this study also noted that the benefits of these conversations were modest and intermittent, indicating that initial belief may not always lead to lasting changes.

Interestingly, the new study’s results were comparable to those of the 2022 GPT-4 Turbo study but with slightly different outcomes. Out of 55 percent of participants not previously encountering conspiracy theories, only 26% reported a reduction in their perception of the likelihood of the theory.
