Why Russian disinformation may be fuelling violence and protests in Glasgow

The recent wave of civil unrest across the UK, most notably following the tragic Southport stabbings, has unveiled a disturbing reality about how modern conflict is waged. What began as localized grief quickly spiraled into violent disorder, fueled by a toxic cocktail of rumors and deliberate falsehoods. While it is easy to view these events through the lens of domestic tensions, a closer look suggests that the fires of discontent are being fanned by hands from far beyond our borders. Expert analysis, including recent insights from the Royal United Services Institute, indicates that hostile foreign actors—most notably the Russian state—are actively exploiting our domestic anxieties. By “outsourcing and franchising” their propaganda to both witting and unwitting proxies, they have successfully turned local grievances into national flashpoints, effectively weaponizing the open nature of our social media landscape to sow discord within the fabric of British society.

The transition of these digital influence campaigns is as chilling as it is calculated. Analysts have traced a clear tactical pivot: after the 2024 general election, accounts that were previously focused on undermining Western support for Ukraine seamlessly pivoted to targeting the newfound Labour government. By injecting inflammatory hashtags like #twotierkier or #twotierpolicing into our discourse, these campaigns aren’t just expressing political dissent; they are participating in a structured effort to delegitimize our democratic institutions. Vladimir Putin’s regime views this as an existential struggle, and for them, the streets of Southport or Glasgow are merely theaters in a much larger, global information war. When a hashtag or a false narrative trends, it is rarely a spontaneous eruption of public opinion; it is often the work of sophisticated bots and state-sponsored amplifiers looking to deepen the fissures between the British public and their police force.

This manipulation is having devastating, real-world consequences, particularly in cities like Glasgow. We are witnessing a pattern where innocent residents are targeted based on malicious fabrications. For example, a local planning dispute regarding a care home is being distorted into a false narrative about asylum housing, turning a bureaucratic matter into an excuse for racist hostility. Police officers, who are already stretched thin protecting the public, are now being forced to contend with an environment where local tensions are perpetually being “supercharged” by digital agitators who have no stake in the community and zero regard for the safety of its citizens. The tragedy here is twofold: not only are communities being intimidated, but the very concept of local truth is being eroded, replaced by a climate of perpetual suspicion where every neighbor is viewed as an adversary.

It is essential to categorize the actors in this drama with clear eyes. Those who show up to commit violence based on a fabricated meme or a lie are, at their core, acting as mindless thugs, forfeiting any claim to legitimate political expression. Yet, the people who mindlessly share these lies, allowing themselves to be herded into discord by foreign interests, are equally victims as they are perpetrators—they are the “dupes” in a game they do not understand. When a person believes a fabricated story about their own neighborhood, they believe they are acting in defense of their home, when in reality, they are merely pawns in a much larger geopolitical chess match. By participating in these movements, they are inadvertently helping a hostile power weaken the stability of the United Kingdom, turning their own anger into a tool for the very people who wish to see our society destabilize.

The implications of this are far deeper than mere political polarization; they touch upon the fundamental issue of national security. As we face global instability and warnings from defense analysts that the UK could be in a state of open conflict with Russia within the next decade, the government and the public alike must rethink how we perceive domestic disorder. What we once viewed as “civil friction” is increasingly indistinguishable from the first stages of hybrid warfare. If individuals or groups are found to be actively coordinating with or enabling the disinformation campaigns of a hostile foreign power, the threshold for tolerance will inevitably shrink. Treason is a heavy word, but in an age where information is just as dangerous as kinetic weaponry, those who invite external chaos into our streets must be prepared to face the legal and moral consequences of their choices.

Ultimately, the goal of this foreign influence is to make us lose faith in each other and in our own institutions. If we allow ourselves to be divided by lies fed to us by those who seek our ruin, we are failing the most basic test of a free and functioning society. Protecting the UK in this new era of warfare requires more than just police lines and security briefings; it demands an informed public that is capable of critical thought and skeptical of the viral content that invades our feeds. We must recognize that the provocateur behind the screen is frequently an enemy agent, and that our anger is their greatest asset. By refusing to be the fuel for their fire, we can reclaim our communities from those who would use our own frustrations to tear our country apart from within.
