Journalists have a professional responsibility to distinguish between an accusation and a fact, especially during a disaster, when the public is frightened and eager for answers. Using “most likely” as a rhetorical device to make a rumour look like a conclusion is a betrayal of that responsibility. Words matter during disasters more than at any other time. A false word can send panic through a valley, can turn one country against another, can make the rescue work more difficult, and can deepen the grief of people who are already broken. The least that journalism can do is tell the truth — or, when the truth is not yet known, to say clearly that it is not yet known.
