Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan Forge Partnership to Combat Disinformation

Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan Forge Alliance Against Disinformation and Fake News

ASTANA, Kazakhstan – In a landmark agreement aimed at safeguarding the integrity of information and combating the growing threat of disinformation and fake news, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have solidified their commitment to collaborative action. Representatives from the Ministry of Culture and Information of Kazakhstan and the Agency of Information and Mass Communications under the President of Uzbekistan convened in Tashkent to finalize a comprehensive Cooperation Plan for 2025, marking a significant step in their joint efforts to counter the spread of misleading and fabricated information.

This strategic partnership comes as a direct outcome of the directives issued following Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s visit to Kazakhstan on August 8, where he and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev underscored the importance of bilateral cooperation in mass communications. The escalating prevalence of disinformation and its potential to destabilize societies, manipulate public opinion, and erode trust in credible sources has prompted both nations to prioritize a unified approach to address this critical challenge.

The Cooperation Plan encompasses a range of initiatives designed to enhance information sharing, strengthen media professionalism, and foster collaboration between the two countries. Key elements include the exchange of media content, enabling broader access to diverse and verified information sources; the organization of joint training programs and seminars for media professionals, aimed at bolstering their skills in critical evaluation, fact-checking, and responsible reporting; and the enhancement of qualifications for press secretaries, equipping them with the tools and knowledge to effectively manage communication strategies and counter misinformation narratives.

Further provisions within the plan focus on supporting the development of young journalists, recognizing the crucial role of the next generation in upholding ethical and accurate reporting practices. This includes providing mentorship opportunities and training programs tailored to their specific needs. Central to the agreement is the joint commitment to combating disinformation through coordinated efforts to identify, expose, and counter the spread of false or misleading information. This collaboration will involve information sharing, joint monitoring activities, and development of strategies to mitigate the impact of disinformation campaigns.

The significance of this partnership is underscored by the recognition of the growing sophistication of disinformation tactics. The proliferation of manipulated media, deepfakes, and the rapid spread of false narratives through social media platforms necessitate a multi-faceted approach that leverages the combined resources and expertise of both nations. By working together, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan aim to create a more resilient information landscape, empowering citizens to critically assess information and fostering a more informed and engaged public discourse.

Beyond the bilateral agreement, Kazakhstan’s commitment to addressing the challenges of disinformation extends to the regional level. The Kazakh delegation’s participation in the 6th meeting of ministers and senior officials responsible for media and information of the Organization of Turkic States further demonstrates its dedication to collaborative action. This regional forum provides a platform for sharing best practices, coordinating strategies, and building a collective defense against the threats posed by disinformation. The partnership between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan serves as a model for regional cooperation in tackling this complex issue, paving the way for a more informed and resilient future.
