The rise of disinformation in the digital age has become a critical hybrid threat, destabilizing national security and eroding the foundations of democracy. As sophisticated artificial intelligence begins to generate hyper-realistic fake images, videos, and articles, the line between truth and manipulation is blurring. Facing this challenge head-on is Rareș Oancea, a 10th-grade philology student from the “Mihai Eminescu” National College in Iasi, Romania. Rejecting the notion that only computer science students can innovate, Rareș has developed a platform called “TruthSeeker,” a powerful tool designed to help everyday citizens navigate the murky waters of online misinformation by providing deep context rather than simple “true or false” labels.
The spark for this project ignited during the chaotic 2024 Romanian presidential campaign. Rareș witnessed a surge of online content that utilized aggressive manipulation tactics to manufacture a near-divine image for certain candidates. What troubled him most was the realization that these messages were not merely the work of automated bots, but were often shared by real people who had become deeply polarized or misled. Faced with a flood of absurd claims—from false accounts of heroism to fabricated tales of military interventions—Rareș felt a moral obligation to act. He realized he could not simply stand by and argue with people online; he needed to build a systemic solution that encouraged objective, critical thinking.
TruthSeeker functions by acting as an unbiased mediator. When a user feeds the platform an article or visual media, it cross-references multiple sources, analyzes linguistic patterns, and identifies common propaganda tropes. Unlike human-led fact-checking efforts, which are vital but labor-intensive, Rareș’s AI remains detached from subjective biases. It is specifically designed to empower the user: instead of simply telling the reader what to believe, the platform provides a breakdown of how the information is framed, who stands to gain from its dissemination, and what facts have been omitted. This transparency allows users to connect the dots themselves, fostering a more informed and skeptical public.
One of the platform’s most impressive feats is its ability to debunk visual manipulation. Rareș has equipped TruthSeeker with the capability to analyze light, shadows, and human positioning within images to detect digital doctoring. In one instance, the platform successfully debunked a fabricated photo of a Romanian politician appearing next to Donald Trump at the Vatican by analyzing the physical consistency of the scene. Furthermore, the platform can process audio and visual metadata in videos to expose propaganda. By “listening” to the actual audio in clips shared by bad actors, TruthSeeker has identified instances where the true context of the video—such as soldiers asking civilians if they were safe—was maliciously rebranded to look like an act of aggression.
Despite the platform’s success, Rareș is the first to admit that the fight against misinformation is an uphill battle. Studies suggest that false information travels significantly faster than the truth, creating a constant race against an ever-evolving disinformation industry. While the platform is not perfect—occasionally missing a perspective if a source is overlooked—it remains a work in progress. For Rareș, the biggest hurdle is not technical, but financial. He has self-funded the project, funneling thousands of euros into server infrastructure, and is now at a crossroads where he must seek external investment to scale the project without compromising his commitment to keeping it free for the public.
Looking ahead, the road for TruthSeeker involves shifting from a website to a ubiquitous digital assistant. Rareș is currently working on browser extensions and mobile applications that will allow users to scan social media feeds in real-time for signs of manipulation. His ultimate vision is for TruthSeeker to become an essential tool for journalists and the public alike, capable of mapping the networks of entities and accounts that spread coordinated disinformation. Though the challenges of funding and technical complexity remain significant, this young student’s dedication serves as a hopeful reminder that with the right tools and a commitment to truth, the next generation is well-equipped to defend the integrity of our information landscape.
