The Romanian high school student who set up his own platform to detect disinformation and fake news ⋆ Universul.net

In an era where digital deception is evolving at a terrifying pace, artificial intelligence has become a double-edged sword. While deepfakes, AI-generated texts, and sophisticated propaganda campaigns threaten the fabric of democracy, a brilliant high school student from Iasi, Romania, is fighting back with the very same weaponry. Rareș Oancea, a 10th-grade literature student at the “Mihai Eminescu” National College, founded TruthSeeker—an AI-driven platform designed to deconstruct online manipulation. Unlike traditional fact-checking, which often struggles to keep up with the sheer volume of viral falsehoods, Rareș’s tool provides users with the critical context needed to dissect who is sharing information, how it’s being framed, and whether the underlying narrative relies on known propaganda tactics.

The inspiration for TruthSeeker struck during the turbulent 2024 Romanian presidential campaign. Rareș observed a massive, coordinated effort to idolize specific political figures through artificial, almost divine, digital personas. What shocked the teenager most was not just the existence of these bot-like campaigns, but the realization that real, flesh-and-blood people—often sharing photos of their own families—were being radicalized by absurd, fabricated stories. From tall tales of politicians halting wars to viral myths about heroic rescues, the deluge of nonsense became impossible for him to ignore. Rather than just arguing with strangers in online comment sections, he decided to build a technological solution to empower people to think for themselves.

What makes TruthSeeker truly ingenious is its commitment to transparency over blind authority. Rareș did not build the platform to be an arbiter of “truth” that demands users take his word for it; instead, the system acts as a guide, providing a side-by-side analysis of how different sources cover a story. By comparing viewpoints, flagging loaded language, and verifying the digital footprint of an image or video, the AI helps users draw their own conclusions. Notably, the platform features a unique capability to detect digital alterations and identify individuals in images, even using physics—such as lighting and body positioning—to confirm whether a photo has been manipulated, outperforming many standard language models in the process.

Despite its impressive successes, such as debunking a viral video that falsely accused Ukrainian soldiers of malice by misinterpreting their background dialogue, the platform is still a work in progress. Rareș is the first to admit that AI is not infallible; the biggest hurdle remains the sheer, overwhelming velocity of disinformation, which spreads six times faster than factual news. Furthermore, the high cost of maintaining server infrastructure and training models falls entirely on his shoulders. Having already self-funded thousands of euros into the project, he faces the delicate challenge of scaling TruthSeeker without locking it behind a paywall, as he is firmly committed to keeping this tool accessible to the public.

Looking ahead, Rareș has ambitious plans to move TruthSeeker beyond a web portal and into the daily digital lives of users. He is currently working on browser extensions and mobile applications that will allow for real-time analysis directly from social media feeds. The goal is to provide a “share to verify” feature that identifies the origin of a post, tracks how it migrated across different channels, and reveals the networks of accounts responsible for its spread. By acting as a constant digital companion, the software will eventually serve as a vital investigative assistant for journalists, researchers, and ordinary citizens alike, helping them trace the genealogy of a viral lie.

Rareș Oancea’s story is a powerful reminder that while the digital landscape can feel hostile and confusing, the next generation is not idly watching their democracy erode. By prioritizing critical thinking over passive consumption, he is building more than just a piece of software; he is fostering a culture of media literacy. While he continues to hunt for the funding necessary to keep his servers running, his platform stands as a beacon of hope against the shadow of disinformation. Through talent, persistence, and a refusal to remain a silent observer, this young student is proving that even in the age of AI, the human capacity for critical inquiry remains our most effective defense.
