Russia-driven campaign to spread disinformation about Ukraine exposed in Austria

In 2022, a Russian intelligence group engaged in a coordinated disinformation campaign targeting Austria, Germany, and other European countries. The Austrian government, in a statement released by its interior ministry, reported that the campaign started approximately two months after the beginning of the widespread invasion of Ukraine in Russia.

During seasonal patrols in the couple’s lucrative home, the Austrian government found evidence of the operation. According to senior officials, the cells could have been tipped off or tracked through surveillance equipment. The group used stickers and graffiti with far-right symbols and nationalist statements, claiming they represented the work of pro-Ukrainian activists.

The Bulgarian woman, believed to be involved in the campaign, confessed to having worked for the cell in 2022. She reportedly directed the campaign effectively and was among the first to expose the disinformation. The Bulgarian suspect is considered an intelligence contact, and spokesperson for the Austrian government noted that her confession provided further insight into the attacks on her home and workplace.

The investigation into the campaign revealed a detailed plan thatדמה mentioned, involving the use of physical devices found during the庭审 of the suspect’s property. The setup includedentieth-level mechanisms and cellular cards that were meant to mimic the work of pro-Ukrainian figures.
